Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine Trainee positions are available at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead (CHW) for up to 24 months commencing in the 2027 Clinical Year, from 01 February 2027.

CHW is a tertiary/quaternary paediatric hospital which is part of The Sydney Children’s Hospital Network (SCHN) serving the state of New South Wales. The Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) has 25 funded beds and admits over 1400 critically ill or injured children annually. Approximately 35% of admissions are cardiac including a wide range of complex neonatal cardiac surgery. CHW is a nationally funded centre for hypoplastic left heart syndrome and has a mature ECMO program. Most sub-specialities are represented including a nationally funded liver transplant program, a large oncology program (including bone marrow transplantation) and neurosurgery. CHW is also the state centre for paediatric burns and a major trauma centre for paediatrics. Academically, the hospital is affiliated to the University of Sydney.

ICU Trainees work on a shift roster with 12.5 to 14 hour shifts with 4 Trainees on during the day and 4 at night on each shift and will work across all areas of the intensive care complex. Trainees take responsibility for patients under their care under the supervision of an Intensivist. The ward is covered at all times by one of the Intensivists. Patient care includes: clinical examination, record keeping, orders for all drugs and ventilator settings, plans for patient care and communication with other staff and the family. All procedures are performed under the teaching, supervision and guidance of the Intensivists. Procedures within this Intensive Care Unit include endotracheal intubation, intraarterial and central venous line placement. The unit offers all modes of tertiary care including inotropic support, artificial ventilation, high frequency oscillation, renal replacement therapy and mechanical circulatory support. ICU Trainees come from a variety of backgrounds including critical care, paediatrics, anaesthetics, and emergency medicine. It is desirable for those appointed for 6 months or longer to have experience in paediatric or adult intensive care.

Selection Criteria:

MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.

Registered as an advanced trainee with a relevant College (RACP, ANZCA, CICM or equivalent).

At least postgraduate year 5 (PGY5) with 6 months recent experience in PICU; or 12 months recent experience in NICU, adult ICU or anaesthesia or any combination over 12 months thereof – at an advanced trainee level in a tertiary hospital.

Previous experience in intensive care environment is highly desirable.

Ongoing commitment to further education and professional development and demonstrated ability to teach, and willingness to participate in the teaching of Medical Students, Junior Medical Staff and other clinical staff.

Advanced Paediatric Life Support provider or equivalent.

Excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to liaise effectively with other health professionals.
