## Position Overview
We are looking for a skilled and detail-oriented Metal Casting Trades Worker to join our manufacturing team. In this hands-on role, you will be responsible for forming sand moulds and CORE SKILLSs used in the production of high-quality metal castings. You will work with a range of metals and specialised equipment to deliver precise, consistent results across varied production requirements. This role suits a trade-qualified professional with a strong understanding of foundry processes, a commitment to workplace safety, and the ability to perform effectively in a fast-paced industrial environment.
## Key Responsibilities
- Select appropriate metal stock and raw materials to meet specific job and production requirements, ensuring quality and compatibility with casting specifications.
- Operate forges, furnaces, and related heating equipment to bring metals to the correct working temperature for forming, shaping, and casting.
- Use hand tools and machine presses to hammer, punch, and cut metal, shaping it accurately to required dimensions and tolerances.
- Cut, trim, shape, and smooth stock materials to fabricate precise mould patterns ready for use in the casting process.
- Prepare and fill moulding boxes with sand, set patterns securely in place, and apply refractory paint to moulds prior to metal pouring.
- Position CORE SKILLSs correctly within moulds and pour molten metal with care and accuracy to produce consistent, defect-free castings.
- Temper and harden finished castings through controlled quenching in oil or water baths, or by managing gradual air-cooling processes as required.
- Inspect completed castings for surface defects, dimensional accuracy, and structural integrity, performing finishing work where necessary.
- Maintain and clean foundry equipment, tools, and work areas to ensure safe, efficient, and hygienic operating conditions.
- Follow all relevant workplace health and safety procedures, including the safe handling of molten metals, hot materials, and hazardous substances.
- Collaborate with supervisors and production teams to meet output targets, flag quality concerns, and contribute to process improvement initiatives.
- Maintain accurate production records, including material usage, casting outputs, and any equipment faults or maintenance requirements.
## Required Qualifications & Skills
- Completion of a relevant trade qualification or apprenticeship in metal casting, foundry work, or a related engineering discipline (Certificate III or higher preferred).
- Demonstrated hands-on experience in a metal casting, foundry, or heavy manufacturing environment.
- Proficiency in operating forges, furnaces, and industrial machine presses safely and effectively.
- Sound knowledge of metal properties, alloy types, and their behaviour during heating, casting, and cooling processes.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, casting specifications, and work orders with accuracy.
- Competence in operating hand tools and finishing equipment used in mould preparation and casting production.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to producing castings that meet dimensional and quality standards.
- Solid understanding of workplace health and safety obligations, including safe handling of molten metals and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a physically demanding, high-temperature industrial environment.
- Good organisational skills and the ability to manage workload effectively to meet production schedules.
## Preferred Qualifications
- Trade certificate or formal qualification specifically in foundry operations, metal fabrication, or materials engineering.
- Experience with a variety of casting methods, including sand casting, die casting, or investment casting processes.
- Familiarity with quality management systems and ISO-accredited manufacturing environments.
- Current forklift licence or experience operating overhead cranes and other materials-handling equipment.
- First Aid certification or willingness to obtain one.
- Prior experience in a high-volume production foundry or precision casting facility.
