The Neonatology term at Royal North Shore Hospital (RNSH) offers junior doctors a rewarding opportunity to gain experience in the care of newborn infants, including those requiring specialised neonatal assessment, monitoring and treatment.

Working within a multidisciplinary team of Neonatologists, Paediatricians, Nursing staff and Allied Health professionals, trainees are involved in the assessment and management of neonates across a range of clinical settings. This includes the care of newborns requiring additional medical support, attendance at high-risk deliveries, inpatient management and participation in family-centred care.

As a major tertiary hospital with a busy maternity service, RNSH provides exposure to a diverse neonatal population and a broad range of clinical presentations. Trainees develop skills in neonatal assessment, resuscitation, clinical decision-making and the management of common and complex neonatal conditions under the supervision of experienced senior clinicians.

The term provides an excellent foundation for doctors interested in Paediatrics, Neonatology, General Practice, Emergency Medicine or any specialty requiring strong skills in the care of infants and children. Supported by a strong culture of education and multidisciplinary collaboration, trainees benefit from formal teaching, bedside learning and opportunities for professional development while contributing to the delivery of high-quality care to newborns and their families.

Where you'll be working - Royal North Shore Hospital

Royal North Shore Hospital (RNSH) is a principal tertiary referral hospital within Northern Sydney Local Health District, delivering a comprehensive range of complex and highly specialised healthcare services to patients across Northern Sydney and New South Wales.

What you'll be doing

To provide effective clinical management of in-patients of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the postnatal ward , under appropriate supervision, including patient assessment, making treatment decisions, performing procedures and maintaining adequate medical records; and to develop expertise in medical practice, in a complex clinical environment. This includes supervised participation in caesarean sections and high-risk deliveries for the purpose of resuscitation and stabilisation of the newborn. The Advanced Trainee is expected to adopt a progressively more independent approach to patient management according to their experience, under the guidance of, and at the discretion of the attending AMO.

Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role
Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team in the planning, delivery and coordination of patient care.
High level communication skills, including the ability to convey, and adapt verbal and written information to a clinical and non-clinical audience
Demonstrated good organisational and time management skills and ability to manage competing priorities in a complex environment.
Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
Demonstrated high level independent clinical skills and judgement, with the ability to make sound decisions and problem solve with an awareness of limitations and ability to learn independently and modify behaviour accordingly.
Previous experience in and willingness to deliver undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and training.
Demonstrated interest and commitment to further education and practice in Neonatal and Perinatal Medicine.

Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination against Specific Diseases

To be employed by NSW Health, applicants must provide evidence of vaccination and comply with the NSW Health Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy Directive (PD2024_01. Compliance with this policy, including any amendments made from time to time, is a mandatory condition of employment.

Applicants will be required to provide acceptable evidence of their vaccination status, immunity, and any other occupational health requirements relevant to the position. Evidence must be submitted and assessed in accordance with NSW Health requirements prior to commencement.

Working with Children Check

This position requires a Working With Children Check (WWCC) clearance issued by Service NSW. A current and valid WWCC is a mandatory requirement for appointment to this role.
