What you'll be doing

The Youth Peer Worker (YPSW) will provide person centred, recovery oriented and trauma-informed peer support.

As an integral member of the Mental Health team, the YPSW will provide a rapid response to young people aged 12 – 17 years with mental distress and/or psychosocial complexity. Many of these young people present in crisis or are transitioning from hospital care.

Working alongside a mutli-disciplinary team the Youth Peer Support Worker provides assertive, outreach support to young people. The support they provide is timely and appropriate in a place where young people live or feel comfortable.

The Peer Worker works collaboratively with young people to deliver support that aligns with the values of Peer Support and the principles of step up/step down care and recovery orientated care. This includes making connections to a range of community-based services, or supporting consumers to determine if they require more assertive acute care.

The YPSW provides direct peer support to people at risk of suicide presenting to the service. They utilise their lived experience of suicidal crisis to promote social connection, and reduce isolation and loneliness. Through purposeful story tell they use their their lived experience to facilitate hope, role-modelling recovery and build relationships that maintain a trauma informed consumer focus.

The Youth Peer Support provides input into policy and contribute to processes that improve the mental health experiences of consumers.

Responses to the questions below:

Personal lived experience of mental distress, suicidal crisis and/or attempt with recovery, and the ability to purposefully use this lived experience to provide peer support to young people at risk of suicide.
Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work (consumer) or willingness to obtain this qualification within 12 months of commencing position, including completion of CHCCCS003 Increase the safety of individuals at risk of suicide, and willingness to complete other essential training as soon as practical. A degree in a relevant field is required for payment at Graduate rate.
Commitment to using person centred, recovery-oriented and trauma-informed principles to provide support to young people at risk of suicide.
Understanding of, and commitment to, the use of lived experience in service design, implementation and evaluation.
Excellent interpersonal skills to work with clinicians from diverse backgrounds and form relationships with a wide range of mental health consumers.
Good verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated competency in Microsoft applications.
Class 1A drivers licence.
Participate in weekends, on-calls and departmental rostering requirements
