The Opportunity
The Fibre Network Design Estimator is responsible and accountable for supporting the planning, design and cost estimation of fibre network builds across the Vocus network. The role combines strong GIS analytical capability with fibre network design principles to accurately evaluate route options, validate spatial data, prepare design artefacts,
and generate cost estimates for new connections, upgrades and relocations.
This position is technical and detail oriented, with no formal leadership responsibility, but requires effective collaboration with fibre designers, planners, engineers, and project managers and reports to Manager of Fibre Network Design Analytics.
What You’ll Be Doing
Geospatial & Data Analysis
- Evaluate, analyse and integrate geospatial datasets, including telecommunications network infrastructure, cadastral data, and satellite imagery to support design decisions.
- Digitise and validate optical fibre routes in GIS, ensuring accuracy and alignment with legacy spatial repositories.
- Produce maps, reports, charts, and spatial visualisations using GIS software and spatial analysis methodologies and generate custom GIS-based reports to support design estimates and project scoping.
Fibre Design Support & Estimation
- Prepare pre-sales fibre designs and develop cost estimates for connection requests, bids, and customer proposals.
- Support fibre planners and designers by providing accurate interpretation of spatial data, constraints, and route options and assist in planning and designing fibre paths for new connections, capacity upgrades, relocations, network extensions, and data centre migrations.
- Contribute to splice schedule preparation and record updates as required by design activities.
- Ensure designs comply with Safety in Design principles and Fibre Engineering standards.
Network Planning & Records
- Maintain and update fibre network records, spatial layers, and associated datasets.
- Assist in monitoring network capacity and identifying upgrade or re arrangement needs.
- Integrate newly collected field or contractor-provided spatial data into GIS systems.
Technical Support & Stakeholder Engagement
- Provide expert user support in GIS layer manipulation, spatial queries, and analysis.
- Troubleshoot GIS, mapping, and data issues, escalating where necessary.
- Collaborate with engineers, fibre designers, planners, and project teams to support accurate and feasible design
outcomes.
- Communicate clearly with internal customers, stakeholders, and contractors as required.
Systems, Tools & Continuous Improvement
- Support the development or enhancement of GIS tools, scripts, and applications relevant to fibre design and estimation.
- Contribute ideas for improving network design workflows, systems, and processes.
- Follow organisational WHSE and Risk Management requirements and report hazards or risks.
- Ensure to meet KPI and SLAs for this role
- Other ad hoc duties as assigned to meet business objectives and organization strategy.
What You’ll Bring
- 3+ years’ experience in telecommunications, fibre design, construction, GIS analysis, or a related technical discipline.
- Proven experience producing fibre design drawings, cost estimates, or route assessments.
- Understanding Data Centre cabling architecture, and fibre network infrastructure is advantageous.
- Exposure to web development (JavaScript, React, Angular, Node.js) is advantageous.
- Bachelor's degree in Telecommunications or GIS or related discipline

- Python scripting experience within a geospatial context: Working
- Understanding fibre network infrastructure, routing, and design considerations: Proficient
