About the role:
Under the broad direction of the General Counsel Company Secretary, this position is responsible for providing legal advice to the executive, managers and staff on planning and development law, broad litigation issues and commercial and property law matters. The position will also conduct Planning and Environment Appeals and Land Court and Common Law actions.
Key functions of the role include:
- Providing high level, professional legal advice to the executives, managers and staff on complex legal matters across a broad range of Unitywater’s activities and responsibilities, with focus on planning and development, environment, property and commercial matters.
- Drafting contracts and statutory notices and approvals.
- The preparation and management of court actions and appearances exercising considerable professional judgement in the Planning and Environment Court, Land Court and Common Law jurisdictions.
- Conducting negotiations for Unitywater with external parties.
- Providing expert legal services including the preparation of complex legal documentation and coordinating and managing representation in complex matters.
- Identifying and recommending changes to Unitywater policies and programmes.
- Providing high level, professional legal advice to the Unitywater managers and staff on complex legal matters.
- Assisting in the timely and efficient deal with customer applications for water and sewage connections.
- Support the collaborative legal and governance team culture.
This position can be based at either Maroochydore or Mango Hill.

Our Legal team comprises seven lawyers, each with their own primary areas of expertise while also working collaboratively across a broad range of legal matters. This flexible approach provides opportunities to gain exposure to diverse work and ensures seamless support and coverage during periods of leave.

- Bachelor of Laws.
- Hold a current Legal Practising Certificate pursuant to the Legal Profession Act 2007.

- Planning and environment or similar legal experience.
- Significant litigation experience, particularly in land and planning matters.

- A comprehensive knowledge of the function, role and responsibility of the political and administrative arms of government authorities experiencing rapid growth and change.
- High level written, interpersonal and negotiation skills, and personal qualities of excellence in the delivery of legal service, displaying tact, integrity and discretion.
