Position Overview
We are looking for a skilled and detail-oriented Fitter (General) to join our team and play a vital role in the fabrication, assembly, and maintenance of production machinery and mechanical equipment. The successful candidate will bring hands-on expertise in fitting and assembling metal components, interpreting technical drawings, and ensuring all work meets precise engineering tolerances. Key Responsibilities
Assess materials, methods, and sequences of operations to determine the most suitable approach before commencing fitting and assembly work.
Fit, align, and assemble fabricated metal parts, subassemblies, and components to build or modify production machinery and industrial equipment.
Inspect and measure metal parts to verify accuracy, clearances, tolerances, and overall fit using precision measuring instruments.
Set up and adjust machine guides, stops, cutting tools, shaping dies, and controls on a variety of machining tools and presses to meet job specifications.
Form, shape, and finish metal stock and castings through pressing, cutting, grinding, planing, boring, and drilling operations.
Cut, thread, bend, and install hydraulic and pneumatic pipework, lines, and fittings in accordance with engineering drawings and safety requirements.
Perform routine and preventative maintenance on machines, mechanical components, and fluid power equipment to minimise downtime and ensure operational reliability.
Erect, commission, and install machinery and equipment on-site, ensuring all components are correctly positioned, aligned, and secured.
Read and interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications, and work orders to plan and execute fitting tasks accurately.
Identify faults, worn components, or misalignments and carry out timely repairs or adjustments to restore equipment to full working condition.
Collaborate with engineers, maintenance teams, and other trade personnel to support production schedules and continuous improvement initiatives.
Maintain a clean, organised, and safe worksite, adhering to all relevant WHS legislation, site policies, and safe work method statements.
Required Qualifications & Skills
Completed trade qualification as a Fitter (General) or equivalent — Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade (MEM30219) or a recognised equivalent.
Proven experience in a fitting role within a manufacturing, mining, construction, or heavy industrial environment.
Demonstrated ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and technical specifications.
Proficiency in the use of hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring instruments including micrometers, vernier calipers, and dial indicators.
Sound knowledge of machining operations including cutting, drilling, grinding, boring, and pressing.
Experience with hydraulic and pneumatic systems, including the installation and maintenance of pipework and fluid power components.
Strong understanding of and commitment to workplace health and safety practices and WHS legislation.
Ability to work both independently and as part of a broader maintenance or production team.
Good problem-solving skills with a methodical approach to diagnosing and rectifying mechanical faults.
Current driver's licence (desirable for some site environments).
Preferred Qualifications
Trade Certificate or additional qualifications in hydraulics, pneumatics, or fluid power systems.
Experience with preventative maintenance programmes and computerised maintenance management systems (CMMS).
Exposure to high-volume manufacturing, processing plants, or resources sector environments.
Forklift licence or experience operating elevated work platforms (EWP).
First Aid Certificate or willingness to obtain one.
Experience with machinery erection, commissioning, or installation projects.
