Primary objective
The Senior Parliamentary Counsel provides legislative drafting services in relation to reasonably complex matters.

Context statement
The drafters in the Office of the Parliamentary Counsel draft legislation, and provide advice on legislation and legislative
proposals, to the Government and Members of the Legislative Assembly in relation to matters within the competence of the
Northern Territory.

Key duties and responsibilities
To draft legislation with a reasonable degree of complexity with minimal supervision and provide advice on legislation and
legislative proposals with a reasonable degree of complexity with minimal supervision.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. Admission or qualification for admission as a legal practitioner of the High Court of Australia or the Supreme Court of an

Australia State or Territory.
2. Experience in drafting legislation with a reasonable degree of complexity, and in providing advice on legislation and

legislative proposals in relation to reasonably complex matters, or ability to draft such legislation and provide such advice.
3. Superior knowledge and understanding of the role of parliamentary counsel.
4. Superior legal knowledge and ability to conduct legal research.
5. Superior oral and written communication skills.
6. Ability to work with minimal supervision.
7. Demonstrated commitment to superior client service and professional standards.
8. Superior ability to develop and maintain relationships with people at various levels.

Desirable
1. Superior knowledge and understanding of the constitutional arrangements in the Northern Territory.
