Primary objective
To provide the Northern Territory Government, its Authorities and Instrumentalities with high quality legal services with respect
to Litigation matters.
Context statement
The Litigation Division provides legal advice and representation in relation to a wide range of civil litigation and administrative law
matters to the Northern Territory Government, its agencies and statutory bodies. The Division is currently organised into a few
discrete teams which include Employment/Administrative Law, Commercial Litigation, Civil Claims and Personal Injury, Criminal
Enforcement, Child Protection and Community Services and Youth Claims. This position is in the Employment/Administrative Law
team. Members of the team are expected to assist in other aspects of the Litigation Division’s practice as directed.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide legal advice and legal representation.
2. Report to the Director of Litigation or Team Leader on the progress of matters.
3. Maintain a high level of knowledge of relevant areas of the law and of relevant practices and procedures.
4. Provide a high level of services to clients including preparation of court documentation, correspondence and other materials.
5. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing and prepare and present legal concepts, positions or factual analyses clearly
and correctly.
6. Represent the Solicitor for the Northern Territory, liaise with clients and deal with people and issues in a professional manner.
7. Organise work to manage priorities effectively and meet deadlines.
8. Accept responsibility for the content and presentation of all documents produced.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Admission as an Australian legal practitioner and eligibility to obtain a local practising certificate.
2. Ability to effectively negotiate and to communicate in a professional manner.
3. Ability to manage a significant file load to meet matter and client needs and deadlines.
4. Ability to cope with pressure and to work as part of a team.
5. Ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures.
Desirable
1. Experience in the practice of law in relevant or related fields.
2. Experience using knowledge of the Territory, its laws, the workings of Government and the development of legal policy in a
practical way.
3. Ability to organise and manage own personal legal practice.
4. Experience using computerised file tracking and time recording systems in a legal office.
