Full Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and influential leader to join DEWC in the newly created role of Deputy Director, Communications and Strategy Integration.

Reporting to the Director: Support Services, you will lead DEWC’s strategic communications and marketing functions, shaping how the organisation engages with key audiences and advances its priorities across Defence and national security environments. You will translate strategic intent into clear, compelling messaging and deliver high-quality communications that strengthen reputation and drive engagement.

Beyond communications, this role plays a critical part in ensuring strategy is delivered. You will drive the coordination and implementation of DEWC’s strategic plans by translating them into actionable operational outcomes, aligning priorities to execution, and ensuring initiatives are delivered in a structured, measurable and outcomes-focused way.

More specifically, this role is responsible for:

Leading DEWC’s strategic communications and marketing direction, defining audiences, narratives and channels to influence stakeholder perceptions and behaviours.
Translating strategic intent into clear, consistent enterprise-wide messaging frameworks across all internal and external communications.
Developing and continuously refining the communications strategy, including executive communications support for the CEO and Senior Leadership Team on messaging, positioning, reputation management and external engagement, including media and key stakeholder interactions.
Delivering high-impact communications products such as speeches, briefings, thought leadership and campaigns while maintaining authorship of critical content.
Overseeing marketing and communication performance, including resource management and metrics, ensuring alignment with strategic priorities and measurable impact.
Translating corporate and operational strategy into executable plans, ensuring clear alignment between strategic intent and delivery across the Operations Department.
Driving and supporting the execution of priority strategic initiatives and enterprise objectives on behalf of the Senior Leadership Team.
Overseeing strategic governance frameworks, including planning, performance tracking, risk management and executive reporting.

About you

This role is ideally suited to a strategic, delivery-focused leader with:

A relevant undergraduate qualification in communications, marketing, public affairs, strategy, public policy, business, international relations or a related discipline (postgraduate qualifications desirable).
A minimum of 10 years’ senior experience in strategic communications, public affairs, marketing or strategy roles, including within or alongside the Australian Defence and national security environment.
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to distil complex information into clear, executive-level outputs.
Proven experience developing and delivering strategic communications plans and high-quality content across multiple formats.
Strong capability in translating strategy into action and leading delivery across multiple workstreams and teams.
Well-established networks across Defence, national security, government and industry, supported by sound judgement, integrity and strong business acumen.
