Civil Engineer — Job Description
Summary
Plans, designs, and oversees construction and maintenance of infrastructure (roads, bridges, buildings, water systems, and site development) to meet safety, cost, schedule, and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare engineering designs, calculations, and construction drawings for infrastructure projects (roads, bridges, drainage, utilities, site grading, retaining structures).
- Perform site investigations, surveys, geotechnical coordination, and feasibility studies.
- Develop and review specifications, cost estimates, and bill of materials; support bid packages and contract documents.
- Create hydraulic and hydrologic models, stormwater management plans, and erosion/sediment control measures.
- Produce structural analyses for foundations, retaining walls, and simple structural elements (coordinate with structural specialists as needed).
- Ensure compliance with local codes, standards, and permitting (zoning, environmental, right‑of‑way).
- Provide construction support: RFI responses, submittal reviews, shop drawing checks, site inspections, and field engineering.
- Coordinate with multi‑disciplinary teams (surveyors, architects, utilities, contractors, regulators) and stakeholders.
- Monitor project schedules, budgets, change orders, and risk; recommend mitigations.
- Implement quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) processes and safety practices on projects.
- Use design and analysis software to model, iterate, and document designs; mentor junior engineers and technicians.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or closely related field; EIT (Engineer‑in‑Training) or equivalent for early career.
- 2+ years of relevant civil engineering experience (adjustable by level).
- Proficiency with civil design and drafting tools (AutoCAD/Civil 3D, MicroStation) and modeling software (HEC‑RAS, HEC‑HMS, StormCAD, SWMM).
- Strong understanding of geotechnical, hydraulic, and transportation engineering principles as relevant to role.
- Familiarity with local building codes, standards (AASHTO, ASCE), permitting processes, and construction practices.
- Competence in engineering calculations, site grading, quantities takeoff, and cost estimating.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to produce technical reports.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or progress toward licensure.
- Experience with roadway design, bridge design, utility design, or municipal infrastructure projects.
- Knowledge of BIM workflows, GIS tools (ArcGIS/QGIS), and project management software (Primavera, MS Project).
- Experience with environmental permitting, wetlands, or water resources projects.
- Familiarity with construction inspection/testing standards (compaction, concrete, asphalt).
Pay: $48.34 – $95.45 per hour
