Junior /Mid Systems Engineer – AI & Technology
Company: iottag
Level: Junior / Mid Level
The Role:
iottag is looking for a highly capable Graduate Systems Engineer to help us design and deliver the next generation of our technology and intelligent systems.
This is a hands-on engineering role sitting between clients, technology partners, system design and our software development team.
We already have a dedicated software development team, so your primary responsibility won't be writing production software every day.
Instead, you'll help engineer the solution.
You'll work to understand complex client and business problems, analyse systems and data, explore what's technically possible, help develop the system vision and then work with our software engineers to bring that vision to life.
You'll be involved from the earliest stages of a problem through to a working solution:
Problem → Analysis → System Design → Prototype → Requirements → Development → Testing → Deployment → Improvement
What You'll Work On
iottag is building intelligent, connected technology systems incorporating:
- AI
- Data and analytics
- IoT and connected devices
- Software platforms
- APIs and system integrations
- Automation
- Monitoring and intelligence systems
- Client and partner technology integrations
Your role will span these areas rather than being restricted to one technology.
Your Responsibilities, Systems Engineering & Solution Design
You'll help take complex problems and turn them into engineered solutions.
This will include:
- Understanding how existing systems, software, devices, data and integrations work together.
- Breaking complex problems into their individual technical components.
- Mapping system architecture, workflows, integrations and data flows.
- Researching technologies and possible approaches.
- Evaluating technical feasibility and trade-offs.
- Helping design new systems and capabilities.
- Building lightweight prototypes and proof-of-concepts where appropriate.
- Identifying technical risks, dependencies and potential failure points.
- Thinking beyond the immediate requirement to consider how a solution should scale and evolve.
AI, Data & Analytics
You'll use data and AI as engineering tools to help us build smarter systems.
This may include:
- Analysing large or complex datasets.
- Identifying patterns, anomalies and opportunities.
- Developing analytical models and dashboards.
- Experimenting with AI models, LLMs and agents.
- Designing AI-powered workflows and automation.
- Evaluating emerging AI technologies.
- Prototyping new intelligent capabilities.
- Working with our software team to integrate successful concepts into production systems.
Work Directly With Clients & Partners
You'll participate directly in technical discussions with our clients and technology partners.
Your job will be to understand:
What are we trying to achieve?
How do the existing systems work?
What data is available?
What are the constraints?
What should the solution look like?
How can we build it?
You'll need to be comfortable asking technical questions, investigating unfamiliar systems and translating complex information into a clear solution.
Turn the Vision Into Something We Can Build:
Once a solution has been identified, you'll work closely with our software development team to turn the concept into reality.
You'll help:
- Define technical and functional requirements.
- Create system diagrams and workflows.
- Document business logic and expected system behaviour.
- Define APIs, integrations and data requirements.
- Break projects into logical development stages.
- Create clear development tasks and acceptance criteria.
- Answer questions and resolve ambiguity during development.
- Review technical approaches with engineers.
- Coordinate development priorities and dependencies.
Drive Technical Projects:
You'll also take responsibility for helping projects move from concept through to delivery.
You'll work across iottag, our clients, external technology partners and our offshore software engineering team to keep everyone aligned.
You'll help coordinate development, track technical decisions, identify blockers, validate functionality, manage testing and ensure the finished solution actually solves the problem it was designed to solve.
What We're Looking For:
We're looking for someone early in their engineering career with very strong technical reasoning and problem-solving ability.
Relevant educational backgrounds may include:
- Software Engineering
- Systems Engineering
- Computer Science
- Mechatronic Engineering
- Electrical / Electronic Engineering
- Artificial Intelligence
- Data Science
- Computer Engineering
- Robotics or related engineering disciplines
You should have strong foundations in:
- Software and systems thinking
- Data analysis
- AI and emerging technologies
- Logical and analytical problem solving
- APIs and system integrations
- Databases and data structures
- Software development principles
- Technical documentation
- Testing and validation
Programming experience particularly Python, SQL or similar technologies will be highly regarded.
What Matters Most
We're not simply looking for the person with the most programming languages on their résumé.
We're looking for someone who can be presented with a difficult problem and think:
“I can figure this out.”
Someone who can investigate how something works, analyse the available information, identify what doesn't make sense, research possible solutions, develop a better approach and work with other engineers to make it real.
You should be:
- Highly analytical — comfortable working through complex problems and data.
- Technically curious — naturally interested in understanding how systems work.
- Creative — able to imagine solutions rather than simply follow existing patterns.
- Resourceful — capable of researching and solving unfamiliar problems independently.
- Systems-minded — able to see how software, hardware, data, people and processes interact.
- Commercially aware — able to understand why we're building something, not just how.
- A strong communicator — capable of working with clients, partners and engineers.
- A builder — motivated by seeing an idea become a functioning system.
What Success Looks Like
Success in this role means becoming someone we can give a difficult technical or business problem to and trust you to help take it from an undefined challenge to an engineered solution.
You'll develop the ability to work across clients, partners, data, AI and software engineering helping define the vision and then coordinating the technical people and resources required to bring that vision to life.
For the right person, this role offers significant scope to grow into the engineering and technology leadership of iottag's future systems.
