## Position Overview
We are looking for a skilled and detail-oriented Cartographer to join our team and contribute to the production of accurate, high-quality maps, charts, and spatial data products. This role combines scientific rigour with creative design, applying mathematical and cartographic principles to transform complex geographic data into clear, meaningful visual outputs. The successful candidate will be comfortable working with both traditional cartographic methods and modern geospatial technologies. This position suits a professional with a strong spatial awareness, technical aptitude, and the ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams.
## Key Responsibilities
- Design and compile map manuscripts using a range of digital and graphical source materials, including aerial photography, satellite imagery, survey documents, field records, and statistical datasets
- Analyse geographic and spatial data to determine the precise positioning of features on the earth's surface, including terrestrial and marine environments, and prepare final outputs in digital form
- Select and apply appropriate map scales, projections, symbology, and design conventions to ensure cartographic accuracy and visual clarity across all outputs
- Advise surveyors, engineers, planners, and other stakeholders on data requirements for map production, including technical, aesthetic, and economic considerations such as scale selection, place name conventions, and reproduction techniques
- Develop and maintain automated spatial information systems, ensuring data integrity and compatibility with current geospatial standards and platforms
- Supervise and co-ordinate the work of cartographic technicians, providing guidance throughout the production and reproduction of maps, plans, charts, and technical drawings
- Collaborate with internal teams and external clients to understand project requirements and deliver cartographic outputs that meet operational and regulatory specifications
- Review and revise existing maps and charts to incorporate updated survey data, boundary changes, or newly available source material, maintaining currency and accuracy
- Contribute to the development and documentation of cartographic workflows, quality assurance processes, and production standards
- Interpret and integrate data from remote sensing, GPS, and GIS platforms to support the creation of accurate and up-to-date spatial products
- Liaise with reproduction and publishing teams to ensure final map outputs meet technical requirements for both print and digital distribution
## Required Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Cartography, Geography, Geospatial Science, Surveying, or a closely related discipline
- Demonstrated experience in a cartographic or geospatial production environment, with a portfolio of relevant work
- Proficiency in GIS software such as ArcGIS, QGIS, or equivalent platforms, along with experience in cartographic design tools
- Strong understanding of map projections, coordinate systems, spatial data standards, and cartographic design principles
- Experience working with remote sensing data, aerial photography, satellite imagery, and digital elevation models
- Solid knowledge of data quality assurance processes and the ability to identify and resolve spatial data errors
- Effective communication skills, with the ability to advise and collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Strong attention to detail, organisational skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines concurrently
- Familiarity with Australian geographic data standards and relevant spatial data frameworks, such as those governed by ICSM or the PSMA
## Preferred Qualifications
- Postgraduate qualifications in Geospatial Science, Geographic Information Systems, or a related field
- Professional membership or eligibility for membership with Surveying & Spatial Sciences Institute (SSSI) or equivalent body
- Experience supervising or mentoring junior cartographic staff or technicians
- Knowledge of hydrographic or marine charting processes and standards
- Familiarity with automated mapping and data publishing pipelines, including web mapping technologies
- Experience with scripting or programming languages such as Python for spatial data processing and workflow automation
## Why Join Us?
