The Opportunity:
We are seeking a trade-qualified Diesel Motor Mechanic to take ownership of our heavy vehicle fleet maintenance program. This role sits at the centre of our operation — your work directly enables our coaches and buses to deliver safe and reliable passenger transport every day.
Beyond the workshop, this position includes fleet vehicle operation under an Australian HR Driver's Licence and a fleet administrative component, making it a well-rounded and senior workshop role within our transport business.
Key Duties & Resonsabilities:
· Carry out scheduled preventive maintenance services on diesel-powered buses and heavy vehicles, including engine servicing, oil and fluid changes, lubrication, filter replacement, and component inspections in line with manufacturer specifications and regulatory requirements.
· Diagnose and identify mechanical and electrical faults across engine systems, transmissions, differentials, suspension, steering geometry, and braking systems of heavy passenger vehicles.
· Dismantle, remove, inspect, and replace worn, damaged, or faulty components including engine assemblies, gearboxes, drivetrain systems, and related heavy vehicle mechanisms.
· Reassemble engine and mechanical components following repair, and carry out postrepair testing, adjustment, and calibration to confirm correct operation and compliance with safety standards.
· Assess heavy vehicles for roadworthiness and produce accurate maintenance reports, fault findings, and service documentation.
· Respond to mechanical breakdowns and provide on-site or workshop-based recovery and repair support to minimise fleet downtime.
· Maintain accurate and up-to-date service records, maintenance histories, and repair logs for each vehicle in the fleet management system.
· Ensure all mechanical work is performed in compliance with applicable WHS legislation, Australian Design Rules, and Queensland transport regulations.
· Operate company buses and heavy vehicles under a current Australian Heavy Rigid (HR) Driver's Licence for purposes including post-service test drives, fleet repositioning, vehicle handover, and occasional passenger transport duties as operationally required.
· Conduct pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections in compliance with roadworthiness and safety standards applicable to passenger-carrying heavy vehicles.
Skills & Experience Required:
· AQF Certificate III or higher in Diesel Motor Mechanics, Heavy Vehicle Mechanical Technology, or a closely related trade field. A minimum of 3 years of equivalent demonstrated experience may substitute formal qualifications per ANZSCO guidelines. (Essential)
· Current Australian Heavy Rigid (HR) Driver's Licence — mandatory for this position. Required for post-repair test drives, fleet vehicle repositioning, and operational transport duties.
· Demonstrated hands-on experience in the maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of diesel engines and associated heavy vehicle mechanical systems, including transmissions, braking, suspension, and steering components
· Desirable Prior experience working within a bus, coach, or commercial passenger fleet environment. Multi-brand vehicle experience is highly regarded.
· Experience maintaining accurate fleet service records, preparing work orders, and recording maintenance histories and repair findings in fleet management or workshop systems.
· Sound working knowledge of workplace health and safety obligations relevant to a heavy vehicle workshop environment, including compliance with Australian Design Rules and applicable Queensland transport regulations.
· Desirable Construction Induction Card (White Card) — Queensland. Desirable for works performed within construction-adjacent or multi-trade environments.
· Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with workshop supervisors, operations staff, and external suppliers. Ability to prepare technical documentation and maintenance reports to a professional standard.
