Full Time, Part-time, Fixed Term, Secondments – Semester 2 2026 and 2027 Clinical Year

Central Australia – the region
The ASH Emergency Department sees approximately 50,000 presentations annually. While that volume mirrors a busy metropolitan regional hospital, the acuity and pathology density are unmatched anywhere else in the country.
- The Clinical Spectrum: You are managing a profound volume of high-acuity, late-presentation pathology. You will routinely lead resuscitations for severe sepsis, advanced rheumatic heart disease, advanced renal failure with critical hyperkalaemia, severe outback trauma, and acute presentations of complex intergenerational trauma.
- The Paediatric Volume: Roughly one-quarter of all ED presentations are paediatric. You will see acute paediatric illnesses—from PSGN, ARF to profound dehydration—ensuring your paediatric competencies are met rapidly.
- The Gateway to the Centre: As the only major acute medical facility for over a million square kilometres, you are the receiving end for the Central Australian Retrieval Service (CARS). You aren't just treating the town; you are treating the entire desert.

You will be the frontline for one of the most challenging and rewarding catchment areas in Australia. An ASH ED term strips away bureaucracy and focuses entirely on the core leadership attributes of a FACEM:
- Advanced Communication & Language Mastery: With First Nations patients frequently speaking English as a third to fifth language, you learn to shed complex jargon entirely. You will master the art of working alongside Aboriginal Liaison Officers and Health Practitioners (AHPs), using deliberate pauses, reading non-verbal diagnostic cues, and practicing deep cultural safety.
- Small-Team Leadership: You are thrust early into the role of the Resus Room leader, learning how to coordinate small teams, delegate tasks to junior doctors, and manage the flow of a high-acuity floor with limited immediate back-up.
- Resourcefulness and Pragmatism: Because you cannot simply click a button to get an immediate sub-specialty review, you learn to make definitive, safe, and highly independent clinical decisions, stabilisation plans, and disposition pathways.
- Supervision and Mentor skills: At Alice Springs Hospital, emergency registrars step into a pivotal leadership role, taking on the rewarding responsibility of directly supervising and mentoring junior medical staff. For many of these registrars, this term provides their very first opportunity to guide junior doctors through the complexities of acute care, serving as a safe and highly supported environment to master essential consultant-level teaching and team-management skills
- Strong Senior Support: The consultant group is heavily invested in your growth. You are never left isolated on a night shift or expected to carry a chaotic department alone; senior support is a phone call away with consultants frequently present at the bedside for STEMI and critically unwell patients.

Alcohol and Other Drugs Registrar (provisional Non-ED/TS4 accreditation from 2027):
- Doing an AOD term at Alice Springs flips the script on how you view addiction. It takes a presentation that many ED doctors find frustrating and turns it into an area of clinical expertise. You return to the Emergency Department floor not just as a doctor who can sedate an agitated patient, but as a leader who understands the deep pathology, pharmacology, and humanity behind the disease.
Aboriginal Health Registrar (accredited Non-ED/TS4)
- Alice Springs Hospital offers a unique opportunity for registrars to step out of the traditional tertiary grid and undertake a groundbreaking special skills post in Aboriginal Health. Embedded within our dedicated ED Care Coordination Team and operating through a Social Emergency Medicine lens, this role allows you to engage in a true bicultural model of working and medical learning.
- Rather than simply managing the acute frontline presentation, you will work side-by-side with an Aboriginal ED Care Coordinator and an Aboriginal Health Practitioner to bring medical, cultural, and social expertise together. This approach allows you to truly look past the clinical textbook, understand the deep systemic drivers behind your patients’ presentations, and deliver care from a powerful, strengths-based perspective.
Palliative Care Registrar (accredited Non-ED/TS4)
- At Alice Springs, a term in Palliative Care flips this paradigm entirely. It provides an elite masterclass in symptom management, advanced ethical navigation, and cross-cultural advocacy that will completely redefine your approach to end-of-life care in the ED.
Paediatric Registrar (accredited Non-ED/PEM/provisional TS4)
- Because you are managing a predominantly indigenous paediatric population, the case mix is profoundly educational. You will manage conditions that are textbook rarities in metropolitan centers but critical frontline realities here: acute rheumatic fever, severe bronchiectasis, complex presentations of failure to thrive, severe acute gastroenteritis with profound metabolic derangement, and unique dermatological and renal pathologies
Intensive Care Unit Registrar (accredited critcare/TS4)
- The Intensive Care Unit is a high-volume, 10-bed Level 2 unit that manages approximately 650 adult and 50 paediatric admissions annually. The case mix is driven by the unique and complex pathology of the Central Australian indigenous population.
- An ICU registrar at Alice Springs is the primary operator on the floor, building the ultimate consultant skillset in leadership, multi-specialty communication, and decisive clinical judgment. With no other senior Registrars or fellows to compete with, you have the opportunity to become proficient in procedures such as arterial lines, central lines, vascaths for dialysis, tracheostomy insertion, bronchoscopy and intubation.
Anaesthetic Registrar (accredited critcare)
- 3 month rotation offered to trainees completing 12 months in ASH ED
- You will learn anaesthetic assessements, airway procedures, conduct pain rounds and perform spinal anaesthesia which improves your LP skills.
- You will learn the nuances of anaesthetising patients with valvular pathology and pulmonary hypertension due to the high prevalence of RHD and bronchiectasis
Retrieval Registrar (accredited Special Skills Post/PHRM Associateship)
- The position is fully accredited for 6 months of Special Skills/Non-ED training by ACEM, as well as being highly valued by CICM and ANZCA. It is also fully accredited for the ACEM APHRM
- This is undifferentiated critical care at its purest. You are tasked with retrieving patients with severe multi-system trauma, acute coronary syndromes, intracranial haemorrhages, overwhelming sepsis, and critical obstetric or neonatal emergencies.
- Because you are the primary critical care provider on the mission, your hands-on exposure to advanced airway management, rapid sequence intubation (RSI), invasive line placement, and advanced point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is incredibly high
