Established in 1962, Belmore School is a specialist school catering for students 5-18 years who have a physical disability and/or significant health impairment requiring paramedical support. Students have a wide range of intellectual abilities, and some have multiple disabilities and complex needs. All students are funded under the Program for Students with Disabilities, however we are currently transitioning students to be funded under the new Disability Inclusion Funding Model. Located in Stroud Street Balwyn with a frontage on Belmore Road, our school catchment area covers the northeast quadrant of Melbourne.
Belmore School has a highly qualified and experienced teaching team passionate about providing an optimum learning environment for our students. Supported by small class sizes and an extensive education support team, teachers aim to provide best practice in teaching and learning to enable each student to achieve their full potential. The teaching and education support team are supported by an onsite allied health team, this team comprises of Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech Pathologists, a Music Therapist and Allied Health Assistants. There is also an experienced Nurse on site at all times to manage students medical needs. The allied health team works closely with families, RCH, Orthokids and NDIS providers to ensure consistency for each student and promote optimal skill development and participation in the community.
SC 1 Hold a Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance or other relevant tertiary qualification, study or previous experience in assisting Allied Health Professionals in a paediatric setting.
SC 2 Demonstrated capacity under the guidance of allied health professionals to implement high-quality programs relevant to the role.
SC 3 High level organisational skills in prioritizing tasks with a demonstrated ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
SC 4 Demonstrated capacity to work cooperatively within a multidisciplinary team comprising teachers, therapists, education support staff, parents and carers.
SC 5 Highly developed communication, networking and interpersonal skills including the ability to liaise effectively with a wide range of people including students with AAC
Range 3 is distinguished by the introduction of management responsibility and accountability for the delivery of professional support services. The role will usually impact beyond the work area or professional field. It seeks to gain cooperation of other staff members or members of the school community to achieve specific objectives, such as in school administration, operations or educational programs.
Direction on targets and goals is provided but the position will have some degree of latitude in determining how they are achieved. This latitude will generally be limited by standard procedures and school policy. Deviation from standard procedures and school policy will require guidance and direction from senior management.
The provision of business management responsibilities becomes a feature at range 3. Management of staff to achieve the expected outcomes is a key responsibility. Staff management issues will be resolved with minimal reference to senior management, although guidance will be required in more complex cases. Senior management will be provided with timely reports and advice, although this will generally be confined to matters relating to the immediate work area, service provision or educational program and is unlikely to impact substantially on whole of school operations.
This is the minimum range for positions that carry a mandatory qualification requirement of not less than four years. Professional student support positions become a feature at range 3 (e.g. therapists, psychologists) where standard professional services are delivered. Professional support and guidance will be close at hand and deviation from standard procedures and school policy will require guidance and direction from senior management.
An education support class position supports the educational services being provided to students, but must not include duties of teaching as defined in clause 2.6.1 of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic) or its successor. Supervision of students cannot be required except where it is an integral part of the employee¿s position or involves supervision of students individually or in small groups, in controlled circumstances, where the responsibility for students remains clearly with a teacher.
To implement speech pathology therapy activities within the school setting, under the guidance of qualified Speech Pathologists and assist students to access the curriculum. Ensuring the therapy plan is within the scope of your practice.
Support therapists and classroom teachers in a broad range of tasks including assistive technology, student engagement, participation and resource development.
Prepare resources, materials, student equipment and school spaces for speech pathology and classroom sessions.
Perform routine administrative tasks and basic student program documentation.
Cleaning, maintenance, and management of student equipment and school spaces as required.
Assist students to engage in meaningful activities that align with their individual education plan on an individual or group basis as directed by speech pathologists or classroom teachers.
Assist students to access classroom or personal AAC devices.
Attend and actively participate in team meetings.
Assist students with toileting, mealtimes and manual handling.
Administer medication to students requiring special care.
Assist with the supervision of students in playgrounds, classrooms, at camps, on excursions, and therapy activities.
Participate in the monitoring and evaluation of programs and evaluation of individual student involvement and achievement.
Ensure work areas and materials, equipment and appliances are maintained in a clean and ready to use condition.
Individuals with the aptitude, experience and/or qualifications to fulfill the specific requirements of the position.
