Annual salary range between $94,479 - $106,907 + salary packaging + 12% super + 5 weeks annual leave

About the team
Nexomics is a dedicated clinical trial division within the Peter MaCallum Cancer Centre. We deliver specialised clinical trial testing for internal stakeholders such as PCCTU and Research teams, under NATA ISO15189 and ISO17025 accreditation. In addition, Nexomics provides central lab services for clinical trials for commercial sponsors, CROs and biopharma companies globally.
About the role
This is a medical scientist role which is responsible for analysis and reporting clinical tests based on genetic and genomic assays.
Primarily this role will assist the clinical trial team in providing molecular pathology services that meet clinical trial requirements including TAT.
A regular day will see you:
Interprets and reports clinically significant results within the required TAT.
Assignment of pathogenicity to variants generated from sequence data.
Complete minimum of 5 cases per day.
Preparation and participation at various meetings including work planning and MDT.
About you

You’ll bring with you:
Minimum qualification Bachelor of Science or equivalent with specific training and/or experience in human molecular genetics or diagnostics.
Minimum 3 years of experience in diagnostic pathology with specific experience in molecular pathology.
Minimum 1 year of experience and competency in analysis and reporting of NGS based diagnostic testing.
Minimum 1 year of experience in curation and interpretation of gene variance in cancer (preferably somatic variant curation and reporting).

Position Summary
To support the clinical trials unit called nexomics to provide the highest quality of molecular services to the patients of Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and its external clients. Key duties and responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
- Work as part of a collaborative team to analyse and report clinical tests based on genetic and genomic assays as directed by Team Leader responsible for section.
- Develop and maintain competency in the use of internal secondary and tertiary analysis platforms and external third-party data sources relevant to effective performance of the role.
- Provide leadership and training in molecular pathology, genomics data curation and interpretation.
- Maintain knowledge of medical/scientific literature relevant to the laboratory's testing programme.
- Prepare for and attend intramural / extramural MDTs and internal Pathology meetings.
- Maintain and enhance expertise by attending and contributing to Departmental and Research Division meetings and seminars, and relevant national and international forums.
- Improve and streamline reporting workflows.
- Prepare and maintain standard operating procedures.
- Conduct continuous quality improvement and ensure maintenance of accreditation.

Essential requirements
BSc or equivalent with specific training and / or experience in human molecular genetics / diagnostics.
Demonstrated experience in/with:
Diagnostic pathology with specific experience in molecular pathology.
Competency in the analysis and reporting of NGS based diagnostic testing.
Curation and interpretation of gene variants in cancer, properties of oncogenic drivers, and relevance to targeted therapy selection.
Understanding of the principles of variant curation, HGVS nomenclature and interpretation of genomic results in the somatic context.
Laboratory quality systems, ISO 15189 standards, and medical laboratory accreditation procedures.
Ability to work interactively as part of an effective clinical team
Professional approach to patient care, service confidentiality and provision of laboratory services.
Communicate cooperatively in a team including with peer and senior scientists, pathologists, genetic counsellors, clinical staff and researchers.
Present work, write protocols and maintain documentation.
Desirable requirements

Professionally advises within and/or outside the laboratory on relevant laboratory and clinical matters.
Communication with clinical staff and external clients as appropriate.
Liaises well with other staff members to ensure that all testing adheres to protocol.
Ensure all incidents and protocol deviations are documented and closed within a timely manner in consultation with the quality team.
Seeks the advice of the senior scientific staff to solve any scientific and technical problems in the laboratory.

Regular and active contribution of knowledge of the medical/scientific literature, as relevant to cancer diagnosis and therapy, to enhance the future care of our cancer patients.

Ensure that all incidents and near misses are reported in the appropriate system and that these records are used for continuous safety improvements. Liaison with OHS representative.
