Full Job Description

Company AccountantPosition Summary

The Company Accountant is responsible for managing the organisation's day-to-day accounting and financial reporting functions and supporting the effective financial management of the business.

The role involves preparing financial reports and management accounts, monitoring financial performance, assisting with budgeting and cash flow management, maintaining accounting records, supporting payroll-related financial reporting processes, and ensuring compliance with Australian accounting and taxation requirements.

The position also provides financial information and analysis to assist management in operational planning and business decision-making and contributes to the maintenance and improvement of the organisation's accounting systems, financial controls, and reporting procedures.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports and management accounts for management review.
Maintain and monitor accounting records, general ledger accounts, and financial reporting systems.
Monitor financial performance, operational expenditure, workforce-related costs, and budget allocations.
Assist with the preparation of budgets, cash flow forecasts, and variance analysis reports.
Analyse financial information and provide reports to assist management in business and operational decision-making.
Manage day-to-day accounting operations, including reconciliations, expenditure monitoring, and accounting and financial reporting processes.
Support payroll-related financial reporting and maintain the accuracy of associated accounting records.
Assist with the preparation and lodgement of BAS, GST, PAYG, superannuation, and other statutory reporting obligations.
Ensure compliance with Australian accounting standards, taxation legislation, and the organisation's financial policies and procedures.
Assist with monitoring NDIS funding utilisation, operational expenditure, staffing costs, and related financial performance.
Maintain financial documentation and audit trails for compliance and reporting purposes.
Liaise with management, auditors, payroll providers, government authorities, and other relevant stakeholders regarding financial matters.
Identify opportunities to improve accounting procedures, financial reporting systems, and internal financial controls.
Contribute to the efficient financial management and ongoing operational performance of the organisation.

Essential Requirements

Bachelor’s degree or higher qualification in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or a related discipline.
Demonstrated experience in accounting, financial reporting, and the preparation of management accounts.
Sound knowledge of Australian accounting principles and taxation requirements, including GST, BAS, PAYG, and superannuation.
Experience maintaining general ledger accounts, performing reconciliations, and maintaining accurate financial records.
Experience assisting with budgets, cash flow forecasting, variance analysis, and financial performance reporting.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret financial information and communicate findings to management.
Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
Strong organisational and time-management skills with the ability to meet reporting and statutory deadlines.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with management and other team members.
Ability to maintain confidentiality when handling sensitive financial, employee, participant, and business information.

Desirable

CPA Australia or CA ANZ membership, or progress toward a recognised professional accounting qualification.
Experience using Xero or similar cloud-based accounting software.
Previous experience as a Company Accountant, Management Accountant, or in a similar commercial accounting role.
Experience within the NDIS, disability, healthcare, community services, or another regulated service environment.
Knowledge of NDIS funding, claiming, participant budgets, and funding utilisation.
Experience analysing payroll, staffing, and workforce-related costs.
Experience with payroll accounting and payroll-related reconciliations.
Experience assisting with external audits, year-end financial reporting, and statutory compliance.
Experience developing or improving accounting procedures, internal financial controls, and reporting systems.
Experience working within a growing small-to-medium-sized organisation.
