Mater is seeking an experienced Registered Midwife, or Registered Nurse/Midwife, to establish and shape the new Women’s Health Navigator role supporting women, families and care teams across Mater.
Based at Mater’s South Brisbane campus, this important role will support our services across Queensland, with some infrequent travel required to build relationships, strengthen pathways and support consistent care navigation across the state.
This is a unique opportunity to help design and embed a new model of care. The successful candidate will play a central role in developing the role, care pathways, referral processes and navigation approach that support women and families through complex, sensitive and unexpected maternity and women’s health journeys, including circumstances involving pregnancy-related decision-making.
As the Women’s Health Navigator, you will act as a trusted point of coordination, communication and clinical support. You will help women and families understand care pathways, access appropriate services, and move safely and seamlessly between internal and external care settings.
This role will work closely with treating clinicians, medical teams, nursing and midwifery leaders, allied health, Mission Integration, education and governance teams, while also building trusted relationships with community providers, primary care, specialist services and partner organisations.
The role is highly collaborative and will help strengthen continuity of care across public and private pathways, inpatient and outpatient settings

About the role
- Lead the establishment of the Women’s Health Navigator function, including supporting the development of the model of care, referral processes, escalation pathways and service navigation approach.
- Provide expert clinical navigation, coordination and consultancy across complex women’s health and pregnancy-related pathways.
- Support women, families and support people through sensitive, uncertain or unexpected care journeys, including compassionate support around pregnancy-related decision-making.
- Coordinate care across Mater, including public and private pathways, inpatient and outpatient settings, and statewide service interfaces.
- Build effective relationships with multidisciplinary teams, Mission Integration, allied health, education, governance, community providers, primary care, specialist services and partner organisations.
- Support timely referral, transfer, continuity of care and access to appropriate support were required.
- Support education, capability building and consistent communication across maternity and women’s health services.
- Contribute to service improvement, pathway review, audit and evaluation to strengthen access, safety, responsiveness and patient experience.
- Advocate for respectful, informed and compassionate care, ensuring women and families feel supported throughout their care journey.
About you
You will bring senior nursing/midwifery experience in maternity, women’s health or a related specialty, with the ability to work autonomously while building strong relationships across complex health service environments.
You will be someone who combines technical capability with exceptional interpersonal skills. You will be calm, compassionate and considered, with the ability to support women and families during emotionally sensitive circumstances while also working confidently with clinicians, leaders and partner services.
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
- Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia as a Registered Midwife, or Registered Nurse/Midwife.
- Current clinical midwifery, or clinical nursing and midwifery experience, in maternity, women’s health or a related clinical specialty.
- Senior nursing/midwifery experience, ideally within maternity, women’s health or a related clinical specialty.
- Significant experience in complex maternity, women’s health or related specialist care.
- Strong care coordination and navigation capability across multiple teams, services, sites and care settings.
- High-level communication, relationship-building and stakeholder engagement skills.
- A compassionate, trauma-informed, culturally responsive and family-centred approach to care.
- Confidence supporting women, families and staff through complex, sensitive and emotionally challenging circumstances.
- The ability to collaborate effectively with internal teams, Mission Integration and partner services.
- A commitment to safe, ethical, evidence-based and person-centred care.
Desirable attributes include:
- Postgraduate qualifications, or working towards postgraduate qualifications, in a relevant specialty such as women’s health, bereavement counselling, leadership or a related area.
- Counselling qualifications or relevant counselling experience.
- Previous experience in a navigation, care coordination, liaison or complex pathway support role.
