About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Automation Electrician Service Technician to join our R&I team at our Underwood branch. In this hands-on role, you will design, install, test, service, and repair a variety of company automation products, including automation and robotics systems, AB PLC (micro and compact logix) and process automation controls, panel builds, and legacy control systems.
Work will be conducted both in our workshop and on client sites. You will also work closely with our Lead Controls Engineer, looking to retire in 12 months, supporting and learning from them while developing a deep understanding of existing and legacy automation platforms. This is a dynamic role that combines technical expertise, learning, project delivery, and customer service.
Key Responsibilities
- Attend customer service calls to test, service, repair, and install automation and robotics systems.
- Build, wire, and test control panels, including fault-finding and modifications.
- Perform controls programming, configuration, and commissioning under guidance where required.
- Assemble, test, and package equipment in the workshop.
- Support and maintain legacy hardware and control systems, including troubleshooting and upgrades.
- Prepare quotations for sales, installations, repairs, spare parts, and panel modifications.
- Deliver outstanding customer service while adhering to customer site requirements and safety standards.
- Complete accurate service reports, timesheets, and expense submissions.
- Manage customer breakdown calls autonomously, resolving issues efficiently with minimal callbacks.
- Support existing service customers while identifying new business opportunities.
- Work as a junior technical resource alongside the Lead Controls Engineer, learning system design, legacy platforms, and best-practice automation approaches.
- Provide technical support and knowledge sharing within the operational team.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues across business units to achieve project and service outcomes.
- Maintain professional personal presentation, including work uniform and company vehicle.
- Ensure workplace safety and compliance with zero major/lost time injuries.
- Coordinate all service and project work through the Service Department, including support for service agreements where required.
Special Conditions
- Occasional overnight, interstate, or international travel.
- Weekend or after-hours work may be required.
- Valid driver’s licence required.
Selection Criteria
- Must have an A-grade Electrician license with 4–5 years’ experience in a similar automation or service role and be able to hold the license for the company in 12 months.
- Experience in panel design, panel build, and electrical wiring.
- Experience with AB PLC and controls programming, commissioning, and fault-finding.
- Exposure to automation and robotics systems.
- Experience supporting and maintaining legacy automation and control hardware.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, control drawings, and technical documentation.
- Demonstrated project delivery skills including scheduling, costing awareness, and stakeholder communication.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with clients, suppliers, and internal teams.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office; CAD software experience highly desirable.
- Experience with service agreements, SAT/FAT documentation, and system commissioning is advantageous.
- Willingness to learn from senior technical staff and develop expertise in existing and emerging automation systems.
