The Role

The vision for South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD) is 'exceptional care, healthier lives'. SESLHD is committed to enabling our community to be healthy and well, and to providing the best possible compassionate care when people need it.

This position is suitable for a General Practitioner (GP) who wants to gain further experience in the management of substance use disorders in a range of different clinical settings. This is a temporary 1-year position available part- or fulltime.

The role will be predominantly based within SESLHD Drug and Alcohol services (SESLHD DAS), but the successful applicant may also be required to work at The Kirketon Road Centre (KRC), a primary health care facility involved in the prevention, treatment and care of vulnerable populations, and in the Substance use in Pregnancy and Parenting Service (SUPPS). They will be required to participate in the afterhours roster including nights, weekends and public holidays and will be renumerated as per the JMO award.

SESLHD Drug and Alcohol (D&A) Service offers a range of treatment and support services for people with problems from their alcohol, prescription or illicit drug use, and/or their families and carers. Outpatient D&A services are located in clinics at the Langton Centre in Surry Hills, St George Hospital in Kogarah, and Caringbah Community Health Centre at Sutherland Hospital. Inpatient D&A services are provided at Sydney Hospital, Prince of Wales, St George and Sutherland Hospitals. Doctors work in a multidisciplinary team with nursing and allied health staff and consumer representatives, to address clients' often complex substance use, health and psychosocial needs.

Selection Criteria

MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category

Completed FRACGP or equivalent

Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team in the planning, delivery and coordination of patient care.

High level communication skills, including the ability to convey, and adapt verbal and written information to a clinical and non-clinical audience.

Demonstrated good organisational and time management skills and ability to manage competing priorities in a complex environment.

Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.

Demonstrated high level independent clinical skills and judgement, with the ability to make sound decisions and problem solve with an awareness of limitations and ability to learn independently and modify behaviour accordingly

Experience working with clients with issues related to drug or alcohol use and commitment to harm minimisation philosophies
