About the Role
This is an exciting leadership opportunity within the Medical Imaging Department at John Hunter Hospital. Reporting directly to the Chief Radiographer, you will join a team of two Assistant Chief Radiographers who provide clinical and operational leadership across one of the largest and most dynamic imaging services in the region.
Maintaining a clinical workload, you will lead from the frontline while supporting service delivery, workforce development, and quality improvement initiatives. Key responsibilities include coordinating staff and student training, providing supervision and support, fostering a strong safety culture, monitoring service performance indicators, and contributing to continuous improvement activities.
You will be supported by an experienced and well-established management team, with dedicated mentorship and hands-on support during your transition into the role. Ongoing professional development is encouraged through leadership and management programs offered by NSW Health and HETI, along with opportunities for networking, external study, and career advancement.
Where You'll Be Working
Based at John Hunter Hospital, a Level 6 tertiary referral centre in Newcastle, you'll be part of a major healthcare hub providing imaging services to patients from across the Hunter New England region and beyond, extending north and west to the Queensland border.
The Medical Imaging Department is undergoing significant growth and redevelopment, including the opening of the new Acute Services Building. Current services include CT, MRI, Ultrasound, Interventional Radiology, Fluoroscopy and General X-ray, with major expansion plans underway, including additional CT and MRI capacity.
Located on the same campus as John Hunter Children's Hospital, the department offers exposure to a broad and complex patient population across neonatal, paediatric and adult services, supporting emergency, inpatient and outpatient care.
About You
You are an experienced senior radiographer with a proven ability to lead and support multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced imaging environment. You bring strong clinical expertise, sound judgement, and a commitment to delivering high-quality patient care while driving service improvement.
You will demonstrate experience in managing workplace challenges through investigation, quality improvement and process redesign, along with the ability to effectively utilise resources and adapt services to meet evolving clinical demands and technological advancements.
This role also offers the opportunity to further develop your leadership capabilities in areas such as workforce planning, rostering, recruitment, project management, and service expansion as part of the hospital's ongoing growth and redevelopment.
Requirements:

Degree in Medical Radiation Science (Diagnostic Radiography) or equivalent, eligible for registration with Australian Health Professionals Registration Authority (AHPRA), maintain Working with Children Clearance (WWCC) and possess a current NSW EPA Radiation licence.

Demonstrated recent managerial experience in a complex Senior Radiographer role, or Assistant Chief Radiographer position or Chief Radiographer role or equivalent managerial experience in a senior Imaging Departmental role.

Participate in clinical radiography, overtime and on-call duties as required, and which may change from time to time.

Eligible to drive in NSW and the ability and willingness to travel for work purposes, which may involve driving long distances.
