South Bunbury PS was established in 1913 and has a highly regarded history of providing quality education to generations of families. South Bunbury ESC provides a specialist learning environment tailored for students with high‑need Autism Spectrum Disorder or Intellectual Disabilities. With approximately 70 students, the Centre offers highly individualised programs in small, well‑supported settings. Staff employ a wide range of evidence‑based strategies and programs to ensure learning is meaningful, targeted and focused on helping each child reach their potential.
Across the South Bunbury Campus, our shared commitment to excellence, inclusivity and student wellbeing has led to the adoption of a whole-campus approach to trauma-informed practice through the implementation of the Berry Street Educational Model. The Role
The Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer (AIEO) plays a vital role in creating a culturally safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment for the Indigenous students across our campus. As a key liaison between school and the local Aboriginal community, the AIEO helps ensure that student learning, wellbeing, and cultural identity are nurtured and respected. A core responsibility of the role is providing mentoring and wellbeing support to Indigenous students. By building trusting relationships and offering consistent encouragement, the AIEO supports students’ engagement, attendance, and academic success.
The AIEO works closely with teachers from both the Education Support Centre and the Primary School to support culturally responsive practice, offering guidance on curriculum planning and reflection against the Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework. Through this collaboration, the AIEO helps foster a strong sense of belonging, pride, and cultural connection within the school and the wider South Bunbury community.
The AIEO also strengthens partnerships with the local Indigenous community, encouraging their involvement in shaping school programs, initiatives, and cultural events such as Breakfast Club, NAIDOC (National Aboriginal and Islanders Day Observance Committee) Week, and the Reconciliation Walk. Active participation and advocacy for developing our South Bunbury Campus Reconciliation Action Plan will be a key component of the role. This connection ensures that our campus remains responsive to community voices and culturally grounded in its practices.
Strong communication, relationship-building and organisational skills are essential to this role, along with a deep understanding of Aboriginal culture, history, and perspectives. The AIEO brings a unique and valued contribution to the school community, promoting respect, understanding and belonging for all.

- Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills, including the ability to interact with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, and liaise with parents/caregivers, families, teachers and community members and assist teachers to understand Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students’ needs.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of building culturally safe environments for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
- Demonstrated effective organisational skills that will assist in the delivery of culturally responsive education programs and subsequent feedback and evaluation to teachers or allied health professionals.
