Reports to: Senior Performance Engineer
VicRoads is on a major transformation journey, focused on modernising digital services and making it easier for Victorians to access registration, licensing and related services. Our purpose is simple: to keep Victorians moving safely and smoothly.
We are looking for a Performance Test Engineer to join our Quality Assurance function and support the delivery of reliable, scalable and high-performing digital systems.
As a Performance Test Engineer , you will be responsible for planning, designing, executing and analysing performance tests to validate the scalability, responsiveness, stability and reliability of VicRoads’ applications, APIs, services and infrastructure.
Working closely with QA, developers, DevOps, architecture and delivery teams, you will help identify performance risks, analyse bottlenecks, support root cause analysis and provide clear recommendations to improve system behaviour in production-like environments.
This is a hands-on role suited to someone who enjoys working across Agile squads, building strong stakeholder relationships, creating realistic workload models, analysing performance results and contributing to continuous improvement in performance testing practices.
- Design, script, execute and analyse performance tests including load, stress, soak, endurance, scalability, reliability and regression testing.
- Define performance objectives, workload models, test scenarios, benchmarks, success criteria and non-functional acceptance criteria.
- Build realistic workload models, reusable scripts and production-like performance test data.
- Monitor and analyse application, API, database, integration, cloud and infrastructure performance metrics.
- Identify bottlenecks, trends, constraints, risks and root causes, and provide practical tuning recommendations.
- Prepare clear performance test reports, result analysis, risk insights and release readiness evidence.
- Support end-to-end performance testing delivery within Agile squads, including planning, estimation, execution, defect follow-up, environment readiness and test data creation.
- Facilitate workshops, walkthroughs, demos and technical discussions to explain test approach, findings, risks, tooling usage and improvement opportunities.
- Support performance testing integration into CI/CD pipelines, performance quality gates and reusable test assets.
- Work autonomously, engage stakeholders effectively and drive outcomes with minimal supervision.
You will bring strong hands-on performance testing experience, solid technical analysis skills and the ability to communicate complex performance findings clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
You are comfortable working in Agile delivery environments, collaborating across teams and helping improve the quality, reliability and scalability of digital services.
- Minimum 4–6 years’ experience in software testing or quality engineering, including at least 3 years’ hands-on experience in performance testing, performance engineering or non-functional testing.
- Experience designing, scripting, executing and analysing performance tests across complex enterprise systems.
- Proficiency with tools such as JMeter, LoadRunner, Gatling, k6, NeoLoad or BlazeMeter .
- Strong understanding of non-functional requirements, including response time, throughput, concurrency, resource utilisation, availability, scalability, resilience and stability.
- Experience analysing performance results and system metrics across application, API, database, integration, network, cloud and infrastructure layers.
- Ability to produce clear performance reports, insights, recommendations and release readiness evidence.
- Experience supporting end-to-end performance testing delivery in Agile teams.
- Ability to conduct estimations and facilitate workshops, walkthroughs, demos and technical discussions with delivery squads.
- Experience working with AWS and other cloud platforms such as Azure or Google Cloud Platform .
- Demonstrated ability to work autonomously, build strong stakeholder relationships and drive outcomes.
- Experience with cloud-native architectures, microservices, distributed systems, event-based integrations, API performance testing and container platforms such as Docker or Kubernetes.
- Familiarity with application performance monitoring and observability, including AWS CloudWatch for metrics, logs, dashboards, alarms and distributed tracing.
- Experience with tools such as New Relic, Dynatrace, AppDynamics, Grafana, Splunk, OpenTelemetry or equivalent.
- Exposure to capacity planning, workload forecasting, scalability modelling, reliability engineering, resilience testing and operational readiness.
- Experience working in regulated, high-availability, customer-facing or mission-critical environments.
- Relevant certifications in performance testing, software testing, cloud platforms, DevOps or observability tools.
This is an opportunity to contribute to the modernisation of critical digital services used by Victorians every day. You will play an important role in improving system performance, reliability and customer experience across a large transformation environment.
You’ll be part of a collaborative QA and Engineering function that values quality, continuous improvement, practical delivery and strong stakeholder engagement.
