About the role
The Mechanical Plant Operator is responsible for the operation, inspection, maintenance and optimisation of critical mechanical plant and infrastructure supporting The Royal Melbourne Hospital.
The position ensures the safe, reliable and compliant operation of HVAC, steam, heating hot water, chilled water, medical air, vacuum and associated building services systems across the hospital campuses. The role undertakes day-to-day repairs, supports preventative maintenance programs, monitors performance via the Building Automation System, and participates in on-call and rostered duties.
Key Accountabilities
Operate, monitor and maintain critical mechanical plant and building services , including chillers, boilers, steam, HVAC, cooling towers, medical vacuum and compressed air systems.
Coordinate reactive, scheduled and preventative maintenance , ensuring timely completion and minimal disruption to clinical operations.
Use BMS and CAFM systems to monitor plant performance, manage work requests and maintain accurate maintenance and compliance records.
Work collaboratively with clinical teams, internal trades, contractors and service providers to resolve maintenance issues and optimise facility operations.
Support safety, compliance and emergency response , identifying risks and ensuring critical infrastructure remains safe, reliable and operational.
Participate in continuous improvement and after-hours/on-call arrangements , contributing to maintenance performance, service quality and operational efficiency
About You
You will hold a trade qualification in Mechanical Fitting, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, or an equivalent engineering trade, and bring:
Demonstrated experience maintaining large commercial or industrial mechanical plant
Experience operating mechanical plant in a critical environment
Working knowledge of HVAC, chilled water, heating hot water, steam and BMS systems
Ability to interpret technical drawings, schematics and operational manuals
Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to diagnose issues and manage competing priorities
Understanding of safe work practices and access/permit systems
Sound written, verbal and numeracy skills
Valid driver’s licence
