## Metallurgist

## Position Overview

We are looking for a skilled and detail-oriented Metallurgist to join our team and contribute to the research, development, and optimisation of metals, alloys, and material processes. This role is central to ensuring the quality, performance, and compliance of metal products used across our operations. The ideal candidate brings a strong scientific foundation, hands-on laboratory experience, and the ability to collaborate effectively with engineering and production teams. You will play a key role in advancing our materials capability while supporting cost-efficiency, safety, and environmental best practice.

## Key Responsibilities

- Conduct comprehensive testing and evaluation of metals and alloys, including microscopic examination, X-ray analysis, X-ray diffraction, and spectrographic studies to characterise material properties and microstructures.
- Measure, record, and interpret performance data for metals and metal combinations, maintaining accurate documentation in line with quality and compliance requirements.
- Assess and determine the most suitable metal or alloy for specific applications, taking into account mechanical, thermal, and environmental performance requirements.
- Develop, trial, and refine hot-working, heat treatment, and cooling processes to achieve desired material characteristics and meet product specifications.
- Investigate the behaviour of metals and alloys under radiation exposure, including space environments and nuclear reactor conditions, and evaluate the joining of dissimilar materials into complex structures.
- Research and experiment with powder metallurgy techniques, including the compaction of metallic powders and sintering at elevated temperatures, to explore new processing capabilities.
- Evaluate the properties and potential applications of exotic or unusual metals, contributing to innovation in material selection and alloy development.
- Advise engineers, production staff, and management on material shortcomings, test findings, and recommendations to address performance issues or prevent failures in service.
- Test alloys to assess engineering properties, validate suitability for intended applications, and confirm compliance with relevant Australian and international standards.
- Collaborate with engineers and company stakeholders to develop alloys and refine production processes that minimise cost, reduce environmental impact, and support sustainable manufacturing outcomes.
- Implement, monitor, and continuously improve testing and quality assurance procedures across metallurgical operations.
- Support failure analysis investigations by identifying root causes of material defects or unexpected behaviour and recommending corrective actions.

## Required Qualifications & Skills

- Bachelor's degree or higher in Metallurgy, Materials Science, Mineral Processing, or a closely related engineering discipline.
- Demonstrated experience in a metallurgical or materials engineering role within a mining, manufacturing, foundry, or related industrial environment.
- Proficiency in metallurgical testing and analytical techniques, including microscopy, spectrographic analysis, X-ray diffraction, and mechanical testing.
- Sound knowledge of metal extraction, refining, alloying, casting, heat treatment, and welding processes.
- Strong ability to interpret and communicate technical data, test results, and reports to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.
- Familiarity with Australian and international standards and compliance frameworks relevant to metals and materials.
- Competence in using laboratory equipment and data recording systems with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Effective interpersonal and collaboration skills, with experience working alongside engineering, production, and management teams.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet project deadlines, and operate with a high level of autonomy when required.

## Preferred Qualifications

- Postgraduate qualifications in Metallurgy, Materials Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Chartered status with Engineers Australia or membership with a relevant professional body such as the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM).
- Experience with powder metallurgy, advanced alloy development, or specialised high-performance material applications.
- Exposure to environmental and sustainability initiatives within metallurgical or manufacturing operations.
- Familiarity with failure analysis methodologies and root cause investigation frameworks.
- Experience operating within AS/NZS quality management systems or ISO-accredited laboratory environments.
