Position Title: Speech Therapist

Role Overview

The Speech Therapist is responsible for assessing, diagnosing, and treating communication and swallowing disorders in individuals with disabilities. They collaborate with clients, families, and other healthcare professionals to develop personalised treatment plans and improve overall communication and quality of life.

Responsibilities

· Assessment and Diagnosis:

o Evaluate speech, language, and swallowing difficulties in clients.

o Diagnose disorders related to communication and swallowing.

· Treatment Planning and Implementation:

o Develop individualised treatment plans based on client needs.

o Provide therapy to improve speech, language, and swallowing skills.

o Teach clients techniques to enhance communication and swallowing abilities.

· Documentation and Record Keeping:

o Maintain accurate records of assessments, progress, and treatment plans.

o Document billing information as required.

· Collaboration:

o Work closely with support workers and other team members.

o Liaise with counsellors, families, and medical professionals.

· Education and Counselling:

o Educate clients and families about speech disorders and their causes.

o Provide guidance on coping strategies for communication and swallowing challenges.

· Community Inclusion:

o Support clients’ participation in their chosen communities.

o Advocate for inclusive practices.

Key Selection Criteria

· Clinical Expertise:

o Demonstrate proficiency in assessing and diagnosing communication and swallowing disorders.

o Show competence in developing and implementing personalised treatment plans.

· Collaboration and Communication:

o Work effectively within a multidisciplinary team, including support workers and other professionals.

o Communicate clearly with clients, families, and other stakeholders.

· Empathy and Patience:

o Exhibit empathy and patience when working with clients and their families.

o Understand the unique needs and challenges faced by individuals with disabilities.

· Documentation and Record Keeping:

o Maintain accurate records of assessments, progress, and treatment plans.

o Ensure compliance with documentation requirements.

· Advocacy and Inclusion:

o Advocate for inclusive practices and community participation.

o Support clients’ integration into their chosen communities.

Qualifications:

· Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Speech Pathology.

· State licensure or certification as a Speech Pathologist.

· Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

· Empathy and patience when working with clients and families.
