Greenroom Robotics is on a mission to revolutionise maritime operations by applying best-in-class software to solve challenging real-world problems. We're Australia's leading maritime autonomy software provider, working with global partners to deliver real impact. Our software coupled with their systems creates unmatched capabilities that scale.
Our four products tackle the four pillars of maritime autonomy: operate autonomously (GAMA), navigate safely (Lookout+), digitise operations (MarOps), and simulate and validate (MIS-SIM). Our platform is operational with partners worldwide, in the hands of real-world operators across defence, commercial, and offshore industries.
The Role
We are looking for a General Manager of Technology to lead and scale our software team. This is a senior leadership role reporting to the CTO, owning the people, process, and delivery performance of the technology function.
Your job is to build and be the leader of a high-performing team that develops world class software and ships quality products reliably. You set the standard for engineering excellence, ensuring our engineers have what they need to thrive, that priorities are sharp and well-sequenced, the right people are in the right roles, and commitments are delivered, every time.
Over the next 18 months the tech team will grow. You will lead that growth: hiring the right people, building the team structure to support it, and ensuring quality and velocity do not degrade as we scale.
Greenroom operates with a GM structure across all functions. The GM of Technology is expected to work closely and collaboratively with peer GMs to solve the unique cross-functional challenges that come with building and delivering complex technical products. Strong communication, teamwork, and a willingness to work through problems at the right level, rather than escalating everything upward, are core to how this role succeeds.
Rates and Location
Salary: Competitive package available
Location: Sydney, St Peters - On-site, where the majority of the tech team is based
Travel: Occasional travel to Perth head office, and international customer sites
Start date: Flexible
Citizenship: Australian citizen and eligible for Security Clearance
What You Will Own
People and team
Build and maintain a healthy team culture (in line with the Greenroom values) where people have a clear voice, grow in their roles, and do their best work
Own software team hiring end to end: define roles, build pipeline, run interviews, and manage onboarding
Supervise all engineering leads. Run 1:1s, performance reviews, and career development activities
Handle the hard conversations - performance, role changes, and exits are your responsibility
Delivery and process
Drive continuous improvement across CI/CD, code review standards, testing discipline, and documentation
Own the development cadence: sprint planning, capacity management, and release coordination
Ensure delivery commitments are met within the Customer Success framework. When they are at risk, surface it early with clear options
Resource allocation: assign engineers to work streams, manage competing priorities, and protect focus time
Technology operations
Own tech metrics: deployment frequency, cycle time, defect rate, and team retention. Know where the team is healthy and where it needs investment
Coordinate cross-functionally on delivery timelines and new technical opportunities
Contribute to Product team discussions on engineering capacity and the cadence of the quarterly release cycle
Manage the tech team headcount budget and tooling spend in partnership with finance and the Chief of Staff (COS)
Experience and Qualifications
The following is required:
10+ years in software engineering, with at least 4 years in engineering leadership managing leads or senior engineers
Track record of building and scaling engineering teams through a growth phase.
Background in a product company, not only consulting or services delivery
Demonstrated ability to improve engineering process without introducing bureaucracy
You have managed senior engineers and leads who are technically stronger than you in their domain, and they respected you for it
You build teams that retain good people - you can point to engineers who stayed and grew because of your leadership
You handle hard conversations directly and do not let performance issues linger
You bring a sense of calm and order to stressful or time critical projects
You can operate in a founder-led environment, build process where none exist, and communicate clearly in both directions without corporate overhead
Technical Depth
You do not need to be the best engineer in the room, but you need to be credible:
Able to participate in architecture discussions and understand trade-offs without needing to own the decision
Familiar with modern engineering practices: CI/CD, containerisation, infrastructure as code, automated testing
Able to evaluate engineering quality - what good code review, testing, and documentation look like
Desirable Experience
Comfort with real-time systems, robotics, or embedded software
Defence software, maritime, robotics, or autonomous systems domain experience
Experience with international customers and remote or on-site deployments
