As a fully owned subsidiary of Safran Electronics & Defense, Safran Electronics & Defense Australasia Pty Ltd (SEDA) delivers and supports various products including high-performance optronics and inertial navigation equipment.
Headquartered in Sydney, SEDA brings local expertise in the integration of optronics and navigation systems for the air, land, and naval platforms of the Australian and New Zealand Defence Forces.
In this role, you will be responsible for the design, integration, and verification of resilient PNT solutions for complex systems operating in challenging environments. You will work across system architecture, GNSS and timing engineering, sensor fusion, and assured PNT technologies, collaborating closely with software, hardware, and systems engineering teams.
This role is suited to an engineer with strong systems thinking, hands-on technical depth, and experience delivering high-reliability navigation and timing solutions.
In addition, the PNT Engineer provides technical input and subject matter expertise during proposal, capture, and tender phases.
In this role, you will be responsible for:
Systems Engineering & Architecture
- Gather, analyse and formalise internal and external stakeholders' needs relating to resilient PNT systems.
- Define end-to-end PNT system architectures integrating GNSS, INS, IMUs, aiding sensors (odometers, altimeters, computer vision), atomic clocks, time servers and Navwar software.
- Develop and maintain PNT architecture, design, and interface documentation, including SAD, SSDD, and interface control documentation.
- Develop simulation environments to characterize PNT solution performance and robustness.
PNT Engineering
- Knowledge on Safran's Inertial Navigation product lines (INS, IMU, gyroscope and accelerometer sensors), address questions and provide training to customers and industry partners.
- Knowledge on Safran's Timing product lines (clocks, time servers), address questions and provide training to customers and industry partners.
- Design, integrate and support PNT solutions for trials, demonstrations and trade shows, including inertial navigation, PPS generation, UTC traceability, clock disciplining, and holdover strategies.
- Support alternative and complementary PNT techniques, including inertial-only navigation, terrain aiding, celestial navigation, and signals of opportunity.
- Contribute to assured PNT strategies for operation in GNSS degraded or contested environments.
