Manager – Day of Operations

About the role
Within the Train Services function, the Manager – Day of Operations reports to the Director – Train Services and leads the safe, efficient, and customer-focused delivery of daily services across the V/Line network.
This role provides leadership to key operational teams, including Duty Managers, Workforce Controllers and Team Managers, ensuring strong coordination of day-of-operations activities and real-time response to service disruptions.
With a strong focus on operational performance and continuous improvement, you will drive a high-performing, collaborative team culture while enabling best practice across safety, service delivery, and customer outcomes.
Key accountabilities include:
Lead and manage day-of-operations teams to deliver safe, reliable, and customer-focused train services.
Oversee real-time operational performance, including disruption management, service recovery, and network plan adjustments.
Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance safety, efficiency, and overall service delivery outcomes.
Lead disruption preparedness and response, including weather event planning and operational readiness.
Ensure compliance with safety, operational, and regulatory requirements across multiple sites.
Provide strong people leadership, including workforce planning, capability development, industrial relations management, and performance oversight.
Location & Travel Considerations
This role is based at Southern Cross Station. Travel across the V/Line network will be required. Additionally, there is a requirement to be on call one weekend per month and act as an escalation point outside of business hours as needed.
About you
You are a strategic and operational leader with extensive experience managing teams in complex, fast-paced environments. You bring a strong focus on safety, performance, and people leadership, with the ability to maintain accountability, remain calm, and make sound decisions under pressure.
Our ideal candidate will possess the following:
Strong operational leadership experience within rail, transport, or a similar service-based industry.
Demonstrated people leadership experience, with the ability to drive accountability and contribute to effective workforce management design.
Proven ability to manage real-time operations and respond effectively to disruptions.
Experience leading operational projects and initiatives, supported by strong commercial acumen.
Experience managing industrial relations and rostering within a unionised workforce.
Strong business, financial, and strategic planning capability.
