## Mining Engineer (Excluding Petroleum)
## Position Overview
We are looking for a skilled and motivated Mining Engineer to plan, direct, and oversee the engineering aspects of mineral exploration, extraction, and mine development. This role is suited to a technically proficient professional with a strong understanding of mining systems, safety management, and operational efficiency. The successful candidate will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure projects are delivered safely, sustainably, and within budget. A commitment to environmental responsibility and continuous improvement is essential to success in this position.
## Key Responsibilities
- Conduct preliminary surveys of mineral deposits in collaboration with geologists, geophysicists, and other specialist engineers to assess resource viability, extraction feasibility, and optimal development strategies
- Evaluate and determine the most suitable extraction methods by analysing factors such as overburden depth, deposit characteristics, and the physical properties of surrounding strata
- Prepare detailed plans for mine infrastructure, including tunnel and chamber layouts, shaft positioning, and the application of appropriate mining techniques to support safe and efficient operations
- Develop accurate project cost estimates, production schedules, and operational budgets, and provide regular reporting on progress, output, and expenditure against targets
- Identify, assess, and manage safety risks across all phases of project development, construction, and ongoing operations, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and industry standards
- Evaluate the structural integrity and safety of mine walls, monitor risk of slippage and rock falls, and implement preventative measures and engineering controls accordingly
- Plan and co-ordinate the deployment of labour and equipment to meet efficiency targets whilst adhering to statutory requirements, safety guidelines, and environmental conditions
- Oversee mine ventilation, ground support, and water management systems to maintain safe and productive working environments
- Liaise with government authorities, environmental agencies, and stakeholders to obtain necessary licences, permits, and approvals for mining operations
- Monitor and ensure compliance with environmental management plans, rehabilitation requirements, and sustainability obligations throughout the project lifecycle
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of mining processes, equipment selection, and operational procedures to optimise productivity and reduce costs
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers, technicians, and site personnel as required
## Required Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline, from a recognised Australian or international institution
- Eligibility for membership with Engineers Australia or an equivalent professional engineering body
- Demonstrated experience in mine planning, design, and operations within an open-cut or underground mining environment
- Proficiency in mine planning and design software such as Surpac, Vulcan, Datamine, or equivalent platforms
- Strong knowledge of relevant Australian mining legislation, safety regulations, and environmental compliance requirements
- Proven ability to prepare and manage project budgets, cost estimates, and production schedules
- Sound understanding of geotechnical principles, including slope stability, ground control, and rock mechanics
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to make sound engineering judgements under pressure
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with experience collaborating across multidisciplinary teams
- Valid driver's licence and willingness to work on site, including remote locations if required
## Preferred Qualifications
- Postgraduate qualifications in Mining Engineering, Project Management, or a related discipline
- Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) status with Engineers Australia
- Experience with feasibility studies, mine closure planning, or rehabilitation programmes
- Familiarity with autonomous or semi-autonomous mining technologies and digital mine systems
- First aid certification and valid site-specific health and safety competency cards
- Experience working on both open-cut and underground mining projects across multiple commodities
