Salary range between $127,941 - $133,059 per annum depending on qualifications, skills and experience plus superannuation.

The role

To ensure compliance with the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972 by undertaking Aboriginal Heritage Surveys (including GIS mapping), desktop analysis, community consultation, provision of advice regarding the NSHA and other matters.

Location

The job requires occasional travel to regional areas mainly in the goldfields, Pilbara and wheatbelt.

Hours

Full time (37.5 hours per week).

About us

Geostake offers mineral exploration and aboriginal surveys services to mining clients throughout WA.

Key responsibilities:

Leadership:

Promote the protection and understanding of Noongar heritage including sites, values, culture, and Noongar connection to land.

Ensure best practice standards, policies and procedures are applied within the Geostake Heritage Team (Team)

Project and Programs:

Undertake Aboriginal Heritage Surveys and field work with Traditional owners to survey specific areas.

Contribute to the Team’s delivery and other Aboriginal heritage related services, including working with commercial proponents, and other stakeholders to ensure Aboriginal heritage values are understood, respected, and protected.

Contribute to the development and delivery of Aboriginal heritage protection agreements and programs, including working with land managers and communities to enhance their understanding, compliance and voluntary ability to protect and manage Aboriginal cultural heritage.

Review and/or prepare documents including reports, briefing papers, correspondence, submissions and advice on operational heritage and cultural issues.

Contribute to investigation of compliance or enforcement activities under relevant legislation.

Provide support to Geostake to improve Aboriginal heritage management including support and guidance to access information from GIS mapping and other relevant data bases.

Participate in the business planning activities of the team, in line with strategic plans, and contribute to the development of operational budgets, corporate plans and grant requirements.

Assist with the logistics and organisation of all heritage activities.

Liaise with consultants to obtain copies of finalised Aboriginal heritage reports.

Undertake other duties as directed.

Selection Criteria:

Essentials

A tertiary qualification (preferably with Honours or a Masters) in Archaeology or equivalent.

Excellent oral and written communication skills, coupled with a demonstrated ability to communicate respectfully, clearly, and effectively with Aboriginal people.

Ability to organise and coordinate work efficiently, to set priorities and to motivate others.

Ability to work effectively and respectfully communicate with all stakeholders including government/non-government proponents, survey providers, developers, miners, and the public.

Ability to effectively use computer applications including Word, Excel, Teams, GIS or other related mapping software.

Ability to undertake a demanding and complex work program independently and as a member of a multi-disciplinary team.

Desirable

A tertiary qualification in Anthropology (or a double major in archaeology and anthropology)

An understanding of the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972.

An understanding of Aboriginal culture and history.

Experience working in Aboriginal heritage or a land management related organisation/department.

Specific Requirements

At least 2 years experience in conducting Heritage surveys

Physical Requirements

The position requires you to work outdoors and walk through country for extended periods of time.
