About Us

Court Services Victoria provides corporate services and facilities to support the performance of the judicial, quasi-judicial and administrative functions of Victoria's courts and tribunal, Judicial College and Judicial Commission.

Collectively, Victoria's Supreme, County, Magistrates', Children's, and Coroners courts, the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT), the Judicial College of Victoria, the Judicial Commission of Victoria, and Court Services Victoria (CSV) are referred to as the ‘Courts Group'.

About the Role

Make a meaningful impact by helping prevent future deaths.

The Research and Policy team is one of four case investigation teams within the Coroners Prevention Unit (CPU). We support Coroners in investigating reportable deaths and identifying opportunities to reduce the risk of preventable deaths in the future.

Our work spans a wide and complex range of cases—from suicides, overdoses and drownings to transport incidents, workplace fatalities and accidents in the home. Every case is an opportunity to generate insights that can save lives.

As a General Case Investigator, you will manage a diverse caseload of referrals, conducting thorough, evidence-based reviews to support coronial investigations and inform prevention strategies.

You will analyse legal, medical and forensic evidence, interpret data, and consult with experts to develop clear, well-founded advice. Your work will culminate in high-quality reports to Coroners, outlining your advice and identifying actionable opportunities to prevent similar deaths.

This is a role for someone who thrives on critical thinking, has exceptional written communication skills, and is motivated by public impact.

Key responsibilities:

Consult with Coroners to define the scope of investigative work
Conduct in-depth reviews of coronial briefs, medical records, and forensic evidence
Analyse data, research literature, policies and guidelines relevant to each case
Identify trends, systemic issues and prevention opportunities
Prepare clear, evidence-based reports and advice for Coroners
Engage with external experts and organisations as required
Contribute to team case management processes

About You

We are seeking a self-motivated individual who can work independently and deliver to deadlines. The successful candidate will also demonstrate:

Experience researching complex issues and translating findings into clear, evidence-based written advice
Strong planning and prioritisation skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively
Experience coding, analysing and interpreting data, and presenting insights to diverse audiences
Curio sity and adaptability, with a willingness to learn and work across new or unfamiliar areas
