Work options: Hybrid
Wesfarmers OneDigital is building Australia's leading data and digital retail ecosystem, underpinned by AI across everything we do. We operate across four pillars - loyalty, data, retail media and AI, turning millions of customer interactions into insights that shape how Australians shop, live and connect.
We're expanding one of our most innovative teams and are looking for exceptional talent to join the AI Build Squad to help our divisions make the most of emerging technologies.
We're hiring three exciting new opportunities: AI Engineer, Senior AI Engineer, and AI Data Engineer.
This is your chance to build cutting-edge AI solutions that reach millions of customers across Australia's leading retailers. You'll work at the forefront of emerging technologies, solve complex business challenges, and help accelerate our AI transformation journey.
The Senior AI Engineer operates as the technical cornerstone of the Accelerator’s delivery function. The role is hands-on — this is not a governance or oversight position, but one that requires deep involvement in the work: designing solutions, writing code, reviewing others’ work, and solving the hardest technical problems the team encounters.
The scope extends beyond individual delivery to shaping how the team builds. The Senior AI Engineer establishes architectural patterns, coding standards, and quality practices that ensure consistency and maintainability. They champion modern software engineering methodologies — including LLMOps and AI operationalisation practices — both enacting them within the Accelerator and promoting them across divisional teams. The role also involves leading contract engineers when engaged, requiring strong leadership and delivery coordination capabilities.
What you’ll do
-
Lead solution architecture for AI initiatives built by the Accelerator, ensuring designs are scalable, secure, and aligned with enterprise standards
-
Deliver complex technical work directly — writing production-quality code and demonstrating the AI-first execution mindset the team embodies
-
Establish and maintain coding standards, architectural patterns, and quality practices across the team’s technical output
-
Champion modern software engineering methodologies — including LLMOps and AI operationalisation practices — enacting them within the Accelerator and promoting adoption across the Group
-
Lead and coordinate contract engineers when engaged, ensuring quality, alignment, and effective integration with Accelerator delivery
-
Conduct code reviews and provide technical mentorship to other team members and embedded divisional engineers
-
Collaborate with the AI Enablement and Governance team, Data & Analytics, and other OneDigital functions to ensure solutions meet governance, security, and compliance requirements
-
Contribute to the Accelerator’s knowledge export function by documenting technical patterns, creating reusable components, and sharing learnings with divisional technology teams
-
Evaluate and recommend technical approaches, frameworks, and tools — maintaining currency with the rapidly evolving AI landscape
-
Partner with the Enablement & Tooling Specialist on the technical dimensions of adoption tooling and developer experience
-
Participate in technical due diligence for vendor and partner solutions as required
-
Represent the Accelerator’s technical perspective in architecture forums, governance bodies, and stakeholder engagements
What you’ll need
- 10+ years of experience in software engineering, with significant recent focus on AI/ML implementation
- A relevant tertiary qualification in business, technology, or a related field is desirable but not essential. Demonstrated business acumen and technology adoption experience will be prioritised.
- Demonstrated experience designing and building production AI systems — not just proofs of concept, but solutions operating at scale
- Track record of technical leadership, including setting standards, mentoring engineers, and owning architectural decisions
- Experience working within enterprise environments, navigating security, compliance, and integration requirements
- Familiarity with modern AI development stacks including LLMs, agent frameworks, and cloud AI services (Azure OpenAI, Vertex AI, etc.)
- Understanding of LLMOps and AI operationalisation practices — monitoring, evaluation, deployment pipelines, and production management
- Deep proficiency in modern languages and AI/ML frameworks; familiarity with multiple languages advantageous
- Strong understanding of LLM architectures, prompt engineering, RAG patterns, agent design, and fine-tuning approaches
- Expertise in LLMOps and AI operationalisation — model monitoring, evaluation frameworks, deployment pipelines, cost management, and production observability
- Experience with cloud platforms (Azure, GCP, AWS) and associated AI/ML services
- Solid foundation in software engineering fundamentals: version control, CI/CD, testing, observability, security practices
- Leadership and coordination skills for managing contract engineers and technical delivery
- Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders
