The Human Resources Officer is responsible for delivering a broad range of human resources and administrative services that support the effective operation of the school. This role ensures the efficient management of recruitment, onboarding, employment administration and workforce processes, while maintaining compliance with Department of Education policies, procedures and industrial agreements.
Working closely with the Principal, Business Manager and leadership team, the Human Resources Officer coordinates key HR functions, including recruitment and selection activities, staff appointments, employment contracts, payroll administration, employee record management and compliance obligations.
Through collaboration with teaching staff, education support staff and external partners, the Human Resources Officer contributes to a positive and professional working environment. The position plays an important role in maintaining accurate and confidential records, providing responsive customer service, supporting workforce planning and promoting effective people management practices across the school.
Key responsibilities include:
- Providing administrative support for recruitment and selection processes, including preparing vacancy documentation, coordinating interview schedules and maintaining accurate recruitment records.
- Preparing employment contracts, letters of appointment and other employment-related correspondence and documentation.
- Processing staff appointments, employment variations, contract renewals, leave applications and other employment transactions through Department of Education systems, including EduPay and School Jobs Vic.
- Maintaining accurate, secure and confidential employee records and personnel files in accordance with Department policies, privacy requirements and record-keeping standards.
- Coordinating onboarding activities for new employees, ensuring all required documentation, compliance checks and employment requirements are completed.
- Monitoring workforce compliance obligations, including Working with Children Checks, Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) registration, mandatory training requirements and fixed-term employment dates.
- Liaising effectively and professionally with employees, applicants, Schools People Services and other Department of Education stakeholders to ensure responsive and efficient HR service delivery.
- Maintaining strict confidentiality and exercising discretion when managing sensitive employee information and employment-related matters.
Manage the schools Local Payroll administration, including timesheet verification, payroll processing, record maintenance, reporting, and compliance with workplace requirements.
Manage workers' compensation claims and return-to-work plans, liaise with staff, WorkSafe Agent and Occupational Rehabilitation Providers regarding injury/claim management matters, and ensure the school meets all legislative obligations related to return-to-work processes and workplace injury management.
- Providing high-quality administrative support to the Business Manager, Principal and leadership team across a range of workforce and operational activities.
- Undertaking other duties consistent with the responsibilities and classification of an Education Support Level 1 Range 4 position, as required by the Principal or Business Manager.

Gisborne Secondary College is a large, stand alone, Year 7-12 College with an enrolment of approximately 1000 students. Our large catchment area covers the Macedon Ranges, north-west of Melbourne.
