External Relations Advisor

Our Opportunity

Work Location: Fortescue’s Perth office, located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk people.

Roster: Monday to Friday.

Fortescue’s Global Sustainability and External Affairs team works across the business and externally to develop and implement government advocacy, approvals and stakeholder engagement strategies that support operational efficiency and growth.

The team’s work includes decarbonisation, energy policy, renewable energy, electricity markets, transmission, green iron, technology and mine development.

The External Relations Adviser will support Fortescue’s government relations and policy priorities, with a particular focus on energy policy and the transition to a lower-emissions industrial base. The role will monitor policy and regulatory developments, prepare advice and support engagement with government, industry associations and other stakeholders.

The role will work closely with the External Affairs APAC team and support the Senior Manager External Affairs APAC in delivering strategic and responsive government relations activities.

Key Responsibilities

Monitor and analyse government policy, regulatory and political developments relevant to Fortescue, particularly energy policy, renewable energy, electricity markets, transmission and industrial decarbonisation.
Prepare policy advice, briefing materials, talking points and correspondence for Fortescue leaders and executives.
Support the development of government engagement and advocacy strategies across energy, decarbonisation, green iron and related policy areas.
Draft and coordinate submissions, consultation responses, letters and other materials to support Fortescue’s policy priorities.
Work with internal teams to assess the implications of energy and climate policy developments for Fortescue’s operations, projects and investment priorities.
Support engagement with Australian Government, State Government, industry associations and other external stakeholders.
Represent Fortescue at selected meetings, forums, conferences and stakeholder events.
Maintain a clear record of government engagement, stakeholder relationships and industry association participation.
Contribute to the broader work of the Global Sustainability and External Affairs team.

The team’s work includes decarbonisation, energy policy, renewable energy, electricity markets, transmission, green iron, technology and mine development.

The role will work closely with the External Affairs APAC team and support the Senior Manager External Affairs APAC in delivering strategic and responsive government relations activities.

Qualifications and Experience

Experience in government relations, public policy, energy policy, climate policy, stakeholder engagement, government, politics or a related field.
Understanding of Australian Government and State Government policy and decision-making processes.
An understanding of energy policy, renewable energy, electricity markets, transmission or industrial decarbonisation would be highly regarded.
Strong research, analytical and written communication skills, with the ability to turn complex information into clear advice.
Experience preparing policy documents, submissions, briefings or correspondence for senior audiences.
Ability to build constructive relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver high-quality work within tight timeframes.
Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a collaborative team.
Strong attention to detail and sound judgement.
Experience with stakeholder relationship management systems is desirable.
