About Monash Newborn
Monash Newborn provides neonatal services to support over 10,500 births a year and is responsible for the provision of neonatal services for Monash Health within the Monash Children’s Hospital Clayton, Dandenong and Casey Hospitals functioning together as a single integrated service with a hierarchy of complexity. About 4,500 babies are born each year at Clayton to a selected high-risk maternity population, while lower risk mothers are managed at Dandenong and Casey Hospitals, which have about 2,500 births at each site each year respectively.
The neonatal nursery in Monash Children’s Hospital has a combined neonatal intensive care and special care capacity of 64 cots. Supported by a comprehensive range of paediatric specialty services at Monash Children’s, the neonatal service is able to provide the full range of medical and surgical care of the newborn with the exception only of ECMO and cardiac surgery. The volume and breadth of the service offers outstanding opportunities for clinical training and research.
About the NMO Role Clayton
The Neonatal Medical Officer will work in the Neonatal Intensive Care and Special Care Unit of Monash Newborn and in the birthing suites and postnatal wards at Monash Medical Centre, Clayton.
The role of Neonatal Medical Officer is a training role created within the Level 5 and 6 Neonatal Units in Victoria to provide a supported introduction to the practice of neonatal–perinatal medicine or the consolidation of already established skills in that field.
A range of both accredited and unaccredited trainees at different stages in their training pathway will be appointed to this role for that purpose. The terms and conditions of their appointment will be determined in accordance with the DIT Award and their level of training.
The new NMO/Latrobe Regional Hospital Paediatric Registrar Rotation position will be offered for the first time in 2027.
2 Trainees will be appointed to this 12 month role to do a 6-month fully accredited rotation in each of these 2 hospitals,
This role offers an exciting NEW opportunity for an appropriate General Paediatric Registrar or Advanced Trainee to complete 6 month’s accredited Acute non-core training in the NICU of Monash Newborn AND 6m of Regional/Rural experience at LRH
NMO, Clayton Role Summary
The NMO will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide safe and effective person centred care and may undertake training towards attaining Fellowship of the relevant college.
This is a 12 month full time role but applications for part-time and 6 month periods will be considered
The role includes:
Patient assessment and management in consultation with the Neonatal Fellow and the Neonatologist attending that area
Patient care coordination including the liaison with visiting specialists and members of the paediatric surgical team, and the management of patients under the care of their team
Attendance at high-risk deliveries with the appropriate support
Family member communication, feedback and liaison
Active participation in all aspects of the Academic Program of Monash Newborn including presentation at Joint Meetings and Grand Rounds
Involvement with research is strongly encouraged and experienced and enthusiastic support will be given for the planning, conducting and reporting of your work
Self-management (including time management, accessing education and training and completing college requirements)
Provide clinical leadership to the multidisciplinary treating team
Demonstrate commitment towards key organisational initiatives
Demonstrate compliance with all relevant Monash Health Policies and Procedure.
About You
To ensure your success in this role you will bring the following demonstrated skills, experience and knowledge
Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
Appropriate health professional tertiary qualifications
Working with Children's Certificate
Previous neonatal experience is preferred but not mandatory
Appropriate experience for appointment to the General Paediatric position at LRH will be required for that role
Mandatory requirements of the role:
Current Drivers Licence

The time spent in this post at Monash is accredited for paediatric advanced training despite the change of job title to Medical Officer and the time spent in General Paediatrics at LRH will be accredited for Rural training.
