The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking a Senior Prison Officer to provide a critical role at the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre.
About the Business Unit

The Dame Phyllis Frost Centre (DPFC) is Victoria's primary women's prison, accommodating people of all security profiles and with a range of general and specialist units. Located in Ravenhall and opened in 1996, the prison has since undergone significant transformation in service delivery and infrastructure. DPFC recognises that women's pathways to offending are unique and that many women engaged in the criminal justice system have a history of complex trauma. DPFC also has capacity for approved women to care for their child in custody. DPFC's policies and procedures are gender responsive and based on trauma-informed practice principles.
About the Role
Senior Prison Officers take a lead role within custodial teams, coaching, mentoring, and supporting prison officers. A Senior Prison Officer's role encompasses a range of teamwork, case management, custodial and security responsibilities. Senior Prison Officers can be responsible for the day-to-day management of prison accommodation and/or security areas/posts. The Senior Prison Officer must have the ability to manage the day-to-day operations of a team of Prison Officers and the case management of more complex or difficult offenders.
Senior Prison Officers will ensure that they and their team of Prison Officers make appropriate notes, documentation, and reports around working with and directly supervising prisoners within the offender Individual Management Files (IMF). This includes direct offender management interactions with each offender to review progress and regular liaison with program staff to ensure the program participation aligns with their needs.
This position is responsible for Telecourts, Education and Programs and currently operates on a Monday to Friday roster. Rosters and hours of work are subject to operational requirements and may change. It is a requirement of this position to work public holidays, which will be remunerated in accordance with VPS Agreement 2024.
Some of your duties will include:
- take a lead role within custodial teams, coaching, mentoring, and supporting prison officers
- undertake a range of teamwork, case management, custodial and security responsibilities
- can be responsible for the day-to-day management of prison accommodation and/or security areas
- must have the ability to manage the day-to-day operations of a team of prison officers and the case management of more complex people in prison
- must model and support pro-social behaviour

About you
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Demonstrated leadership capability within a correctional environment
- Commitment to working with staff, people in prison, and other service providers t o reducing re-offending.
- Experience in correctional service delivery, including staff supervision, case management and operational security practices.
- Knowledge of, and the ability to apply relevant legislation, policy and procedure relating to Corrections Victoria and the management of its prison facilities.
- Computer skills, including experience with the Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to learn and use internal systems (e.g. PIMS, e-Justice, Centurion).
Qualifications/requirements
- A full and current Victorian driver's licence or a minimum P2 driver's licence.
- Completion of the Prison Officer Pre-service Training or a willingness to undertake and complete the provided Prison Officer Pre-Service Training is required.
- Certificate III in Correctional Practice (Custodial) or similar (desirable).
- Certificate IV Training and Assessment (desirable).
