About the opportunity

NSW Health Pathology at Concord Hospital is seeking a permanent part-time Technical Officer to join its busy Microbiology laboratory. The role involves performing routine core diagnostic microbiology duties, including pre-analytical tasks and position-appropriate post-analytical responsibilities. This is a Technical Officer–level position, and credentialed applicants will only be considered for the substantive Technical Officer role, with remuneration aligned to Technical Officer salary scales. The successful candidate will participate in an after-hours rotational roster. Standard working hours are 8:30am to 5:00pm, with additional shifts including morning (6:00am to 2:30pm), evening (1:30pm to 10:00pm), and weekend shifts (Saturday and Sunday, 8:30am to 5:00pm).

What you'll be doing

Perform a range of laboratory investigations and tests (manual and automated) and technical tasks by applying established methods and procedures, as directed. Undertake other laboratory duties including preparation of materials and the maintenance of equipment in line with established laboratory processes, procedures and protocols.

Minimum qualification of Diploma in Laboratory Technology or an equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary institution with subjects relevant to pathology or medical laboratory operations. Please attach an official academic transcript.

Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the delivery of pathology services within a discipline relevant to the department, including use of Laboratory Information Systems, Patient Systems and Quality Systems

Ability to work in a responsible and efficient manner and to manage competing priorities to meet deadlines. Include examples of efficiency in your answer

Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment whilst working autonomously to deliver results within specified timeframes set to meet client expectations. Include examples where you contributed to a team and your autonomous role in your answer.

Customer focused approach displaying well-developed interpersonal skills and good oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with customers and patients as well as clinical laboratory staff

Display initiative, problem solving and analytical skills including an ability to apply established principles in a pathology laboratory and investigate and resolve general and complex issues within the laboratory environment. Provide an example in your answer demonstrating these skills

Commitment to the principles of quality management and continuous quality improvement and to identify, develop and implement quality and service improvement activities
