L2 Data Center / Smart Hands EngineerJob Description
We are looking for an experienced L2 Data Center / Smart Hands Engineer with strong hands-on experience in data center operations, fiber testing, physical cabling, network/server equipment support, break-fix activities, and remote hands support.
The ideal candidate should be comfortable working with fiber testing equipment, network and server hardware, structured cabling, rack and stack activities, equipment replacement, planned maintenance, and circuit migration activities.
Key ResponsibilitiesFiber Testing & Cabling
- Perform fiber testing, troubleshooting, and fault identification using OTDR, LSPM, VFL, OSA (Optical Spectrum Analyzer), BER testing equipment, and other fiber testing tools.
- Perform fiber inspection, cleaning, testing, and troubleshooting.
- Identify high-loss, damaged, or broken fiber using appropriate testing equipment.
- Perform MPO fiber testing and troubleshooting.
- Install, remove, replace, and test fiber optic cables and optical transceivers.
- Perform optical cable replacement and restore connectivity following approved procedures.
- Perform loopback installation and testing for remote circuit troubleshooting.
- Support optical circuit testing and validation.
- Perform physical fiber, copper, and power cabling activities.
- Perform cable routing, dressing, labeling, patching, and cable management within data center racks.
- Support northbound cabling and physical connectivity activities.
- Maintain accurate cable and port identification and documentation.
Data Center / Smart Hands Support
- Provide Smart Hands / Remote Hands / Hands-and-Eyes support to remote network, server, storage, and infrastructure teams.
- Perform rack and stack activities for network, server, storage, and other infrastructure equipment.
- Install, remove, relocate, and replace data center equipment as required.
- Perform equipment labeling, patching, asset tagging, and physical installation.
- Insert and remove network/storage media and optical modules as instructed by remote engineering teams.
- Perform power cycling, rebooting, reseating, and replacement of cables/components.
- Assist remote teams with fault diagnosis and physical troubleshooting.
- Perform complete unit replacement when required.
- Provide loopback cables and physical connections for remote circuit testing.
- Support remote engineers through phone, remote tools, or onsite assistance.
Network & Server Infrastructure Support
- Support physical and virtual servers, network devices, routers, switches, firewalls, storage devices, and server/network appliances.
- Support network switches and SAN fabric switches.
- Provide physical support for WAN optimization devices, access points, KVM units, and other network infrastructure.
- Support basic physical configuration activities under the direction of remote engineering teams.
- Assist with basic storage array configuration where required.
- Support backup and tape storage equipment, including tape management and maintenance activities.
- Perform physical diagnostics and assist with identifying failed components.
- Support hardware replacement and RMA processing.
- Troubleshoot and replace defective cables, optics, modules, and other field-replaceable components.
Break-Fix & Maintenance
- Perform break-fix troubleshooting for data center infrastructure.
- Conduct functional testing of equipment and identify failed components.
- Perform diagnostic checks and assist remote teams with failure analysis.
- Support planned and predictive maintenance activities.
- Support circuit migration, equipment migration, and infrastructure upgrade activities.
- Perform pre-checks and post-checks during planned maintenance.
- Follow approved MOPs, SOPs, Change Requests, and technical task instructions.
- Ensure all physical changes are accurately documented after completion.
Infrastructure / Facility Support
- Provide physical support for Power Distribution Units (PDU), UPS systems, and associated power infrastructure where required.
- Assist with physical checks related to earthing systems and HVAC infrastructure as part of site support activities.
- Perform basic physical inspection of equipment, racks, power connections, cabling, and associated infrastructure.
- Escalate electrical, environmental, or infrastructure issues to the appropriate specialist/vendor team.
Ticketing, Reporting & Coordination
- Follow specific task instructions provided by remote engineering or project teams.
- Record all activities accurately in the relevant IT Ticket Management / ITSM system.
- Provide detailed updates, test results, photographs, and other evidence where required.
- Coordinate and confirm attendance dates and times with key stakeholders.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed, equipment replaced, cable changes, test results, and restoration activities.
- Escalate issues that cannot be resolved onsite to the appropriate L3, engineering, or vendor team.
- Coordinate with network, server, storage, security, facilities, and vendor teams as required.
Site Survey & Audit
- Perform data center site surveys, site inspections, and infrastructure audits.
- Validate physical equipment, cabling, rack positions, ports, labels, and asset information.
- Identify discrepancies between physical infrastructure and documentation.
- Support site maintenance activities and coordinate with onsite vendors where required.
- Provide clear reports and findings following site surveys and inspections.
Required Technical Skills
- Hands-on experience in Data Center Operations / Smart Hands / Remote Hands / Infrastructure Support.
- Experience with fiber optic cabling and testing.
- Working knowledge of OTDR, LSPM, VFL, OSA, BER, and fiber inspection/cleaning tools.
- Experience with MPO fiber connectivity and testing is preferred.
- Experience with fiber and copper structured cabling.
- Knowledge of optical transceivers and network optics.
- Hands-on experience with rack and stack, patching, labeling, and cable management.
- Experience supporting network switches, routers, firewalls, servers, storage, and SAN equipment.
- Experience performing hardware replacement, break-fix, power cycling, component reseating, and diagnostics.
- Experience with RMA and faulty component replacement.
- Familiarity with KVM, WAN optimization devices, access points, and network appliances.
- Basic understanding of storage and backup infrastructure.
- Experience with planned maintenance and circuit migration.
- Familiarity with ITSM / ticketing systems such as ServiceNow.
- Ability to follow MOP/SOP instructions and work safely in a production data center environment.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with Cisco, Arista, Juniper, or other network equipment.
- Experience with enterprise server/storage platforms.
- Experience with SAN / Fibre Channel environments.
- Experience with data center structured cabling standards.
- Previous experience with OTDR, LSPM, OSA, BER, VFL, and MPO testing.
- Experience performing data center site surveys and audits.
- Experience working with remote NOC, Network Engineering, Server, Storage, and Infrastructure teams.
