Role Description:
We have an exciting opportunity as the Senior Outfit Mechanical Engineer, where you will be responsible for leading the delivery of mechanical outfit engineering services across the Hunter Class Frigate Program (HCFP). The role provides technical oversight, peer review, and specialist guidance for the design, development, modification, integration, installation, and verification of outfit systems, equipment, and spaces.
You will act as a key technical interface between the outfit engineering discipline, production, supply chain, integrated project teams, and external stakeholders. The Senior Engineer ensures solutions are safe, compliant, fit for purpose, and delivered in accordance with approved standards, engineering governance, and project objectives. The role may include holding delegated technical authority for defined outfit systems.
Core Duties:
- Provide assurance to the Design Authority on the adequacy of outfit mechanical engineering outputs and safety case evidence
- Own and lead several outfit systems or major spaces from concept through to acceptance
- Ensure technical requirements, regulatory obligations, safety considerations, and classification society requirements are embedded within all design outputs
- Lead resolution of high-risk or cross-discipline engineering problems
- Produce and review high level technical reports, engineering assessments, change proposals, and stakeholder briefings
- Mentor, coach, and guide Outfit Engineers and Junior Engineers within the team
- Support continuous improvement of outfit engineering processes, tools, and governance
- Maintain and develop specialist knowledge of outfit engineering, naval standards, shipyard constraints, and production interfaces
Essential Skills:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Mechatronic, Aeronautical Engineering, or equivalent
- Defence security clearance
- Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) or working towards chartered status
- Demonstrated experience as a professional mechanical engineer, including extensive exposure to naval or marine outfitting
- Proven experience leading engineering activities, design packages, or workstreams
- Experience in design reviews, integration studies, qualification testing, and technical problem-solving across multiple ship spaces or systems
