About the Role
John Holland Group is seeking an experienced Senior Systems Engineer to join our Rail Engineering & Integration group, delivering Systems Engineering, Safety and Assurance (SESA) services across a portfolio of major rail projects.
As a Senior Systems Engineer, you will be responsible for leading the application of systems engineering principles, processes, and governance across the full project lifecycle, ensuring complex rail systems are defined, developed, integrated, verified, and delivered in accordance with project requirements, operational objectives, and regulatory obligations.
The role offers the opportunity to contribute to some of Australia's most significant rail projects while working alongside industry-leading specialists in systems engineering, safety, assurance, and rail integration.
Key Responsibilities:
Systems Engineering Leadership
- Lead the application of systems engineering processes and methodologies across the project lifecycle.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to systems engineers and project teams.
- Support the planning, coordination, and execution of systems engineering activities in accordance with project requirements.
- Ensure alignment with ISO/IEC 15288 systems engineering processes and organizational governance frameworks.
Requirements Engineering
- Lead the elicitation, analysis, validation, and management of stakeholder and system requirements.
- Develop and maintain requirements baselines and traceability throughout the project lifecycle.
- Facilitate requirements reviews and ensure alignment between project objectives and technical solutions.
System Architecture and Design
- Develop and review system architectures, functional models, and technical solutions.
- Conduct functional decomposition and allocation of requirements to system elements.
- Support the assessment of design options and trade-off studies to optimise system performance and lifecycle outcomes.
Interface Management
- Define and manage Interface Management processes.
- Facilitate interface workshops and manage interface agreements across multiple stakeholders.
- Identify and resolve interface risks, dependencies, and integration constraints.
Verification and Validation
- Develop and implement V&V strategies and plans for complex rail systems.
- Lead verification and validation activities, including preparation of compliance matrices, test procedures, and evidence packages.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams to ensure successful integration and demonstration of system requirements.
Configuration and Change Management
- Maintain technical baselines and manage engineering change processes.
- Assess impacts of proposed changes on system performance, safety, integration, and project outcomes.
- Ensure configuration management practices are applied consistently throughout the project lifecycle.
Stakeholder Management
- Engage effectively with clients, operators, maintainers, assurance bodies, regulators, suppliers, and project teams.
- Facilitate technical reviews, workshops, and engineering governance forums.
- Communicate complex technical issues clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential
- Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Software Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- At least 7 years demonstrated experience applying systems engineering principles on complex Defense, infrastructure, transport, or rail projects.
- Proven experience managing systems engineering outcomes through all phases of the project lifecycle.
- Proven experience leading Systems Engineering functions within multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Strong understanding of systems assurance, hazard management, and safety-critical engineering principles.
Desirable
- Postgraduate qualification in Systems Engineering or a related discipline.
- INCOSE Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) or Expert Systems Engineering Professional (ESEP) certification.
- Demonstrated capability in leveraging digital engineering, automation, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies to improve systems engineering efficiency, traceability, analysis, decision-making, and project delivery outcomes
- Knowledge of Australian rail safety accreditation frameworks.
- Experience with requirements management and systems engineering tools such as IBM DOORS, Relatics, ComplyPro, Jama, Enterprise Architect, or equivalent.
