The System Safety Engineer will work closely with a team of Engineers, providing guidance on all system safety requirements and ensuring the integrity, compliance, and effectiveness of the technical and design solutions within our defence shipbuilding design project.
- Examine customer requirements and assist in the development, design and integration activities ensuring compliance with contractual, regulatory, and technical requirements.
Provide expert guidance on project integration across teams using System Engineering management principals.
Identify, assess, and mitigate design risks to safeguard project timelines, budget, and quality objectives.
Perform risk assessments to evaluate the likelihood and severity of identified hazards, considering factors such as system complexity, operating conditions, and potential failure modes.
Execute design assurance processes, procedures, and standards to uphold the safety and risk throughout the design, production, testing and certification lifecycle.
Collaborate with system designers and stakeholders to establish safety requirements and design constraints based on identified hazards and acceptable risk levels
Evaluate proposed design changes, assess their impact on project scope, schedule, and cost, and facilitate their implementation in accordance with change control procedures.
Ensure accurate and comprehensive documentation of design decisions, rationale, and specifications to facilitate traceability, transparency, and knowledge transfer.
Apply safety analysis techniques, such as Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), safety in design, Event Tree Analysis (ETA), Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOP), to systematically analyse potential safety risks and their consequences.
Develop and execute safety verification and validation plans to ensure that safety requirements are effectively implemented and validated throughout the system lifecycle.
Prepare and maintain safety documentation, including Safety Assessment Reports (SARs), Safety Case Reports, Hazard Logs, and Safety Requirement Specifications (SRS), to demonstrate compliance with regulatory standards and customer requirements.
Promote a collaborative environment and visible mentorship within the team setting the standard for others to follow.
5 Years proven experience in an engineering role and considered expert within the defence or maritime industry, with a focus on shipbuilding or automotive projects.
Knowledge of relevant regulations, standards, and best practices governing naval vessel design and construction. Experience in defence contracting, understanding of military and government project documentation standards.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and mentor abilities, with a track record of effectively engaging stakeholders and guiding multidisciplinary teams.
Familiarity with design software and simulation tools commonly used in shipbuilding environments.
Proactive manner demonstrating strong commercial aptitude and interpersonal skills.
Highly Proficient in Microsoft Office software.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions, identify work priorities in a constantly changing environment.
Relevant Tertiary qualifications at degree level.
