Primary objective
Responsible for the delivery of a high-quality mental health service to children and young people with serious emotional and behavioural
difficulties, including mental health assessment and evidence-based interventions across a diverse population.
Context statement
This clinical role is part of a diverse multidisciplinary team providing quality mental health care to children, young people, and their families
within the Tennant Creek Child and Youth Mental Health Team. It requires experience in child and youth mental health and the ability to
manage a caseload effectively. The role operates within a trauma-informed, recovery-focused model of care and values the cultural
perspectives of Central Australian families, particularly the insights of Aboriginal Mental Health Workers. Strong cultural safety, evidence-
based practice, and the capacity to work autonomously within a supportive team are essential.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. An experienced mental health clinician competent in delivering services within a Child and Youth Mental Health Team and in the
context of a multidisciplinary mental health team.
2. Manage a complex and mixed caseload of children and youth in which assessment, clinical and case management to accepted clients
is provided.
3. Support improvements in the community needs-driven distribution of services, including the development of new service models in
response to Department of Health and National mental health reform directions.
4. Responsible for the implementation of clinical guidelines and standards related to their professional services within the area of children
and youth.
5. Contribute to the development of contemporary models of care within Mental Health Central Australia.
6. Contribute to research and undertake quality evaluation at program or professional network level.
7. Maintain high standards in report writing, electronic record keeping, and file maintenance and quality assurance in service delivery.
8. Follow established service quality and work health and safety procedures to ensure safe, high-quality services and workplaces.
9. Foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary leadership practices and role modelling behaviour.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Meet the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) requirements to practice as a Psychologist, Mental Health Nurse
or Occupational Therapist and/or meet criteria as a qualified Social Worker for full membership of the Australian Association of Social
Workers.
2. Demonstrated recent clinical experience in the mental health assessment, treatment and rehabilitation methods appropriate to children
and adolescents and their families/carers.
3. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with clients, carers and other professionals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
4. Demonstrated knowledge of current issues, standards and trends in the delivery of mental health services to the target population.
5. Demonstrated ability to prepare written reports of a high standard and complete clinical documentation in a timely manner.
6. Proven ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
7. Hold a current Northern Territory (NT) driver’s licence or ability to obtain.
Desirable
1. Postgraduate mental health qualifications, with a preference for those with child and adolescent mental health training.
2. Previous experience working within a child and adolescent mental health service.
