The Victoria Police Forensic Services is an accredited laboratory that provides a professional forensic service to Victoria Police, persons involved with the administration of justice, and the public.

Case Reporting Unit 1 (CRU1)

Ongoing Forensic Caseworker role available - Forensic Officer Level 3 (FO-3)

About the Unit

The function of the Case Reporting Unit (CRU) is:

To analyse and report on results obtained from the biological examination of crime exhibits
To attend crime scenes
To provide expert evidence in court
To participate in activities around the operation of the National Criminal Investigation DNA Database (NCIDD) and the NCIDD-Integrated Forensic Analysis (NIFA) database

Note: based on business need, this role may include transfer for defined periods to other work units within BSG.

Key Accountabilities include:

Undertake routine biological casework as part of a team
Assess cases to determine testing requirements with other members of the team.
Assess and report on the results of Routine Biology casework and DNA interpretation. This will involve statistical interpretation of DNA results.
Quality checking and reporting of DNA database links
Attend and examine crime scenes and manage associated casework
Initiate problem identification and develop methods and procedures
Maintain document performance with respect to quality control criteria
Provide recommendations to management on administrative, scientific and database procedures as appropriate
Provide general administrative assistance, respond to customer enquiries, maintain computerised records and compile statistical reports
Participate in accreditation duties and obligations as required.
Present expert opinion evidence in Courts of Law relating to multi-disciplinary skills in an impartial and concise manner
Maintain appropriate knowledge of Victoria Police and Forensic Services policies, procedures and legislation.

Skills & Experience

Scientific/technical achievement, ability to interpret examinations and to successfully present technical and discipline related knowledge and advice to scientific/technical and non-scientific personnel at all levels, particularly in a Court context.
Proven commitment to quality in casework and/or research or the ability to provide it.
Well-developed specialist subject knowledge with an emphasis on forensic science.
Proven ability to work autonomously and/or within a team environment.
Ability to conduct scene examinations where little or no supervisory advice is available.
Demonstrated Conceptual, analytical and problem-solving skills.
An understanding of the customer service requirements of the position and a demonstrated record of strong commitment and achievement in meeting customer needs.
A proven record of ethical behaviour and a demonstrated commitment to the Victoria Police Code of Ethics and Conduct and the Organisational Values.

Requirements and relevant information:

Ongoing FO-3 position available.
Position is located at 31 Forensic Drive Macleod.
A relevant tertiary qualification is required.
Bachelor of Science Degree, preferably with a major in Molecular Biology and Genetics or equivalent.
The successful candidate will be required to provide a DNA sample (buccal swab) for use in laboratory quality control procedures (elimination purposes only).
The successful candidate will be required to undergo pre-employment checks which may include fingerprint checks and misconduct screening.
