At Aurizon, we're leveraging advanced analytics and optimisation techniques to solve complex operational challenges across Australia's largest rail freight network. We're seeking a mathematically minded Data Scientist to design and develop optimisation models that improve how we plan, schedule and operate our rail services.
About the Role
This is a unique opportunity for a Data Scientist who enjoys solving real-world optimisation problems rather than traditional reporting or dashboard work.
Working within our Data & Insights team, you will develop mathematical and analytical models that help optimise key operational decisions across the business, including train scheduling, crew planning, asset utilisation and network efficiency. You'll partner with operational and business stakeholders to transform complex challenges into practical, data-driven solutions that deliver measurable commercial and operational outcomes.
Key responsibilities include:
- Developing and implementing optimisation, machine learning and advanced analytical models.
- Solving complex operational and commercial challenges through quantitative analysis.
- Designing and testing mathematical models, simulations and scenario analyses.
- Working with large and diverse datasets to identify opportunities for improved performance.
- Translating technical findings into practical recommendations for business stakeholders.
- Researching and applying innovative analytical techniques and technologies.
- Collaborating with business leaders, subject matter experts and technology teams to deliver value-focused solutions.
About You
We're particularly interested in candidates with a strong mathematics, operations research, statistics or quantitative modelling background who enjoy solving optimisation problems.
You may have experience in areas such as:
- Operations Research
- Mathematical Modelling
- Optimisation
- Decision Science
- Advanced Analytics
- Data Science
- Applied Mathematics
Experience with optimisation tools such as Gurobi will be highly regarded, along with experience using Python, SQL and other analytical or modelling technologies. You'll be comfortable working through complex problems, testing hypotheses and developing scalable analytical solutions.
To Be Successful You Will Bring
- A degree in Mathematics, Operations Research, Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering or a related quantitative discipline.
- Experience developing optimisation, simulation or advanced analytical models.
- Strong programming and analytical skills, ideally including Python and SQL.
- Experience working with large data sets and complex business problems.
- The ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Strong problem-solving, critical thinking and stakeholder engagement skills.
Why Aurizon?
This is an opportunity to apply advanced mathematics and optimisation techniques to one of Australia's most complex operational environments. You'll work on meaningful challenges that directly influence how trains are scheduled, crews are allocated and freight is moved across the network, delivering tangible improvements to business performance.
