Intensive Care Unit, Trainee, Nepean Hospital

Employment Type: Temporary Full Time (01-Feb-2027 up to 2 years)

Nepean Hospital is an important referral and teaching hospital of the University of Sydney. It serves the local areas of Penrith, Hawkesbury and the Blue Mountains (comprising a population of 300,000 and growing) and accepts patients from as far as Lithgow and Bathurst flown in by helicopter retrieval services. Nepean Hospital is the Regional Trauma Centre for these areas.

Depending on individual requirements and satisfactory performance, we will arrange placements for CICM-accredited trainees to complete the mandatory training requirements in medicine, anaesthesia, paediatrics and rural medicine. Weekly formal teaching for Primary and Fellowship exams is provided.

The Workplace Based Assessment (WBA) pathway is designed for international medical graduates who have passed the AMC Computer Adaptive Test Multiple Choice Question (CAT MCQ) examination, hold registration as a medical practitioner and are appointed to a hospital or general practice position. Nepean Hospital is an accredited Workplace based assessment (WBA) program provider.

What you'll be doing

Clinical management of ICU patients under supervision, including the resuscitation and management of unstable patients within the ICU and hospital.
Assessing patients referred for Intensive Care Admission as per the ICU Admission Policy and discussion with the Intensive Care Specialist before accepting or refusing patients.
Ensuring that all transports for procedures outside the ICU are conducted according to CICM standards for transport of the critically ill.
Team Leader of Medical Emergency Team and team member of the hospital Trauma Team.
Ensure that the ward team Specialist is aware of the outcome of MET calls on their patients.
Participating in 24/7 rotating roster of days, evenings, nights and weekends.

Where you'll be working

The unit consists of 21 beds and all beds are equipped for mechanical ventilation.
The department has 11 Staff Specialists, 1 Echo Provisional Fellow, 3 Provisional Fellows, 15 Trainees, 4 Senior Medical Resident Officers and 4 Residents.
Trainees within the Intensive Care Unit currently work 12 hours day and night shifts. Trainees will be informed if this roster changes due to Departmental requirements.
Trainees are expected to rotate externally to Hawkesbury Hospital (Anaesthesia), Children’s Hospital Westmead (Paediatrics); internally within Nepean Hospital (Medicine & Anaesthesia); and other hospitals/departments as and when circumstances arise.

Nepean ICU Training

As a Trainee working at Nepean ICU, you will be an integral part of all departmental training programs including weekly formal teaching conducted for CICM-accredited trainees, academic and clinical presentations and ultrasound training.
Trainees may also access our mentorship program run by Fellows by which they can approach Fellows for advice, support, feedback and assistance.
Nepean ICU has a state of the art multimedia space with a dedicated graphic designer and multimedia manager to record podcasts and produce educational material.

Essential requirements

MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
Applicants who are not currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia must meet English language skills registration standard (medical) and attach evidence of this to their application.
Currently registered with the College of Intensive Care Medicine as a trainee, or eligible for registration with the CICM within the ensuing 12 months.
Clinical experience required to undertake the key accountabilities for this role including experience in critical care disciplines of anaesthesia, emergency medicine, and/or intensive care.
Prior postgraduate experience and/or qualifications in intensive care medicine.
Proven expertise/experience in management of commonly encountered critically ill medical and postoperative surgical patients including cardiothoracic intensive care and trauma patients under supervision.
Prior experience in leading a Medical Emergency Team Service.
Proven expertise in basic and advanced airway management and vascular access, mechanical ventilation, advanced cardiac life support.
This position is subject to an appropriate supervision level which can be supported by the health agency. If the incumbent's registration conditions include supervision requirements, the level of supervision must be able to be supported by the health agency for this role.
Valid Working with Children Check, cleared National Police Check.
To be employed by NSW Health you are required to provide evidence of vaccination to comply with the NSW Health Occupational Assessment, Screening & Vaccination against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy, this includes any amendments made from time to time.

Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role.

Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams, including the sharing of appropriate information internally and externally with key persons or services.

Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgment and expertise.

Advanced verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to vary communication style in line with the understanding of the needs of diverse audiences.

Adept ability to prioritise workloads and display a flexible approach to meet changing situations in a demanding and unpredictable clinical environment.

Commitment to participating in training and development opportunities to further develop skills and knowledge in the area of intensive care medicine.

Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
