Specialist Training Position for Public Health Registrar

An exciting opportunity is available for a medically-trained public health medicine registrar, enrolled with the Australian Faculty of Public Health Medicine, to gain skills in Aboriginal health, rural and remote health, and epidemiology. This unique 12 month position will be hosted by Maari Ma Health Aboriginal Corporation, an Aboriginal community controlled health service based in Broken Hill. Maari Ma services far western NSW.

This position will be based in Sydney with regular trips to Broken Hill for fieldwork – this arrangement will be negotiated with the individual and is flexible. The opportunity for an extended period in Broken Hill is encouraged and financially supported by the organisation.

During the year the trainee will undertake a number of planned projects, and also contribute opportunistically to public health issues that emerge in the region, designed to provide them with a range of population health experiences. There is scope to identify training activities that support the successful candidate’s outstanding training requirements.

Maari Ma has a long history of epidemiological, CQI and evaluation activities to inform service development and delivery for Aboriginal people in far western NSW, supported by AFPHM fellows and a data analyst who are employed by Maari Ma. This supervised placement focused on Aboriginal health in a rural/remote setting is intended to allow trainees to gain insight, understanding, exposure to, and experience of:

Key public health issues facing rural and remote, and Aboriginal populations, both acute and chronic;

- The impact of rurality and remoteness, and Aboriginality, on the management of public health issues, including the challenge of working with distance, limited resources, and unique health issues;
- The lack of equity in rural and remote, and Aboriginal settings, including access to health services;
- Engagement with rural and remote communities, and in particular, rural and remote Aboriginal communities;
- Public health workforce issues in rural and remote communities, including issues related to the limitations of public health infrastructure.

The trainee will be well supported – Maari Ma Health employs an AFPHM fellow, an extensive network of specialist medical and public health advisors and a data analyst. This position is STP funded.
