The Role

The Vision Statement is:'Nurses and midwives at St George Hospital are always compassionate and competent in the delivery of excellent patient and family centered care.' Eight core behaviours were identified as being integral to achieving the vision:team player;caring;respectful;honest;advocate;collaborative;considerate and accountable.

The Midwifery Unit Manager is the registered Midwife in charge of a ward/unit or group of wards/units or a service (e.g. Child and Family Health) within SESLHD. The purpose of the Midwifery Unit Manager grade 2 (MUM2) is to:lead, direct and co-ordinate patient or client care;ensure the practice of nursing and/or midwifery is safe and efficient, maintaining standards of care through continual quality improvement initiatives;lead and coordinate the nursing and midwifery and multidisciplinary care team at the ward or unit level, and monitor and manage the business and management functions and processes of the ward or unit;As the leader of the unit, the MUM2 will demonstrate her/his capability through attitude, skills, behaviour and attributes, namely:broad midwifery experience and knowledge;understanding and acceptance that patients are the central focus of service delivery;professional integrity;ethical conduct;accountability;advocacy;enabling others;cultivation of collaborative relationships and effective team work;commitment to advancing the profession of midwifery and care provision. The Midwifery Unit Manager Level 2, whose responsibilities in relation to patient services, ward or unit management and staff management are in excess of those of a Midwifery Unit Manager Level 1.

Selection Crtieria

Current registration as a Registered Midwife with the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Australia.

Relevant management tertiary qualification or equivalent work experience, or a combination of study and work experience with a demonstrated commitment to professional development.

A demonstrated knowledge and experience in the management and delivery of health care services.

Proven ability in innovative clinical service delivery, harm minimisation and practice development.

Effective interpersonal and communication skills that demonstrate the ability to engage, enable and manage teams.

Proven ability to create and maintain a positive workplace culture and articulate and achieve a vision for midwifery services.

Demonstrated recent midwifery management experience in the specialty in an acute care facility.
