A typical day at work is a majority of time management, meetings, audits, inspections.
I learned to time manage by way of creating a reminder on my calender a day prior in order for me to manage the next day which provides me with plenty of time to prepare for the daily schedule in advance.
Management understand their responsibilities and provide assistance when practicable.
Co-workers are non discriminating which makes my role very comfortable within the team and work environment.
The hardest part of my role is getting out to complete inspections to be more proactive with the competing workload making work more reactive at times.
The most enjoyable part of the job is being able to get out and about and have a hands on approach to the businesses in which I support.

Flexible work arrangements offset by average wages. Management are influenced by local government decisions in moving forward and sometimes not in everyone's favour. 
Provide great training on and off the job. Great friendly teams and support staff to work with. There is no hard part to this job physically as all the gear you need is provided although being physically fit is handy. The wages aren't great but overtime opportunities are abundant through most of the year with bonus nine day fortnights.
Free onsite staff Gym is advantageous.  Project satisfaction, training and great field teams make this a great place to work.

A typical day involved responding to an invitation to attend a meeting to discuss a proposed event.

I learnt to communicate with and liaise with people from varying backgrounds, cultures and other affected stakeholders. I also learnt to prioritise work and meet deadlines.

This work environment provided great management with a clear direction, focus, vision for the city and leadership.  Innovation was fostered and autonomy embraced. 

At times, this could prove to be challenging, especially with unplanned events and marches that impacted on the traffic  network and public transport system.

The reward came when the event was rolled at with the minimum impact on the grid.

Brisbane Transport is a great place to work, the team environment is promoted as with the ability to challenge new ideas. In my time with the organisation, I was involved in delivering cost-effective public transport solutions. I was also involved in the G20 summit which involved many different local agencies combining to deliver a transport plan. With working at the Brisbane City Council you are part of a bigger picture of making the city a place where people want to come and experience all the things it has to offer.

Pros

Excellent resources available (provided the funding is forthcoming) coupled with some extremely talented people creates an environment where big things are possible - provided that management don't get in the way.

Cons

All the bureaucracy you'd expect, and some more. Progressive areas have to maintain adapters to deal with the decision-makers stuck in the past. Not much career advancement possible to maintain the sheltered workshop that protects the permanents.

Advice to Management

Choose a long-term operating model strategy, and stick to it. Changing models every 2 years is useful for no-one.

Good people to work with both in admin. and in the field.

Plenty of training available and good chances advancement

A day at work started with going to the office to organise gangs and plant operators for the days jobs from the main work sheds and then going out in the field to see other gangs and operators who work from other depots. During the day liase with members of the public and other foreman and overseers. Finish of the days work by doing any necessary paper work in the office.

I was a temp and and worked a 38 hour week for several months. I found it great working within a team and having a team leader. The hardest part of the job at first was finding my way around the huge filing system, but I soon became familiar with the it. The most enjoyable part of the job was learning the software programs within such a large organisation. I also enjoyed reaching my goals at the end of a day. These included finishing the amount of data entries that were set within my team.
